I received the G1 vinyl skin I ordered from iStyles just over a week ago and have now taken some photos to let you guys see what it looks like installed. Interestingly the two skins I ordered from iStyles are actually Decal Girl products packaged in an iStyles case.

The vinyl skins come in three pieces, one for the back, one to cover the buttoned area under the screen and a surround for the screen. The skins are printed on a cast vinyl produced by 3M, apparently this is a superior type of vinyl which is thinner and longer lasting, the skin should last 7-9 years according to the packaging.

It is coated after the printing process to protect the image, this also gives it a high gloss finish. The adhesive backing features a hexagonal pattern which means that any bubbles are easy to remove. Trapped air will follow these hexagonal channels as you push the skin down, working their way to the edge making the skin simple to apply.

The adhesive doesn't leave any kind of residue and it is really easy to peel the skins off and re-apply if you get it wrong. I have had this skin on for over a week now and it does exactly what I wanted, gives my phone a bit of extra protection without adding much bulk.

You can feel the edges of the stickers but only just, according to the blurb the finished sticker is 6-7 mil thick which is about 0.1778 millimeters. I haven't had any problem with the edges of the skin coming unstuck yet.

You also get a code to download a background which matches the skin, this is nice but I like to change my wallpapers fairly frequently.

Note: the 2nd and 3rd photos were taken with a rather shallow depth of field which i appreciate may not be the best for getting a close up look at a product like this when viewed full size (click on the photo).

Cool,

But what if you're going to a black tie affair, would that phone be appropriate to pull out the case ?

Easy fix, get a bow tie wallpaper, no problems.

Haha, kitsunisan, pretty good.

But seriously, he shouldnt be worried about having to take it out at black tie affairs, it goes against black tie etiquette. He would be stepping out of the room to take the call anyways, as is proper.

haha.

2 Funny, I actually wear bow ties quite a lot

*You're right Dixie (But you do see a fair amount of BB floating around)

Well, if you see that again, turn your nose up, look away and mumble "hrrumph", as is ALSO proper in black tie etiquette.

Hmm, although that just might only work for old ladies.

In any event, I really like the skin. It's much more appropriate than my neon green case! :D

Luckily I don't attend many black tie events :-) Funnily enough the other skin i bought features fluorescent green quite prominantly, not tried it yet tho.

Haha, yeah... sorry to hijack your thread and take it down an etiquette road ;)

I actually love my green case... I usually keep a wallpaper that has some sort of android logo built into it, and it really looks cool with the case.

Haha, DYM.... love the graphic ;)

That's cool that you found a wallpaper that matches it. I'm a fan!

even easier than that, you get a code with the skin which you enter on the site along with your email address and they send it to you as an attachment. nice people :-)

Any chance you'd be willing to post that screen? Kind of like it.

I was looking at a skin on Decalgirl, if you like it in a few days, I may order it.

Nice, thanks. Skin still holding up for you? If it is, I'll place that order tomorrow.

Great thread, man. Thanks for sharing. I'm picking up a pair of G1s tomorrow for my wife and I, and this looks like an awesome way to tell them apart. I also want a protective case, though, so what are people using as a combination? I'm assuming a hard clear plastic "snap on" style would obscure the image a bit but work. They're so bulky, though. What if I used a BodyGuardz/Phantomskinz style cover and put the DecalGirl skin OVER it?

thoughts?
