G1 Data question

Hey guys,newbie here lol Have a question.I am going to be recieveing my T-Mobile G1 tomorrow,and the guy from CS over the phone said I have to call them when I get it & provision the phone for the data plan I choose.They said it could take up to 48 hours.Does that mean I can't browse the web nor activate/use the G1 until the data takes effect?:confused: Also how long was it for you guys when the service kicked in after you got it? BTW this is an upgrade,not new service.

umm...yea kinda. i got one for xmas. i made sure i had the data plan the day before i got the phone so i could automatically start using it. this was not the case. 48 hours is a minimal. mine was like 3 days before i changed the apn settings and broke into the phone that way.

i wouldnt recommend doing what i did...changing the apn settings. it caused a few problems with picture messaging and things like that. just be patient. and make sure you have a google account before you get the phone so you dont have to create one using the phone.

Would I be able to use the phone for phone services & at least WIFI for downloading apps/web surfing until the data kicks in?

there is a little button for emergency calling only...which will bring up the dialer...

almost everything on the phone requires sync with google. the data plan doesnt kick in for 48 hours. you cant sync with google without it. before you can even see the home screen...the phone needs to sync with google.

Hmm I just called CS back (Because I was having some online issues with their site),and I talked to the rep & he changed it & said it's now "Future -dated" for tomorrow & said that as soon as I get the phone I'd be able to use it,because the data service was "Future-dated" for tomorrow.....Anyone ever heard of this?:confused:

you could say thats what i did. i got the data plan before i got my phone. it did not work when i first got it. you may have better luck.

When I got mine, out the store I opened it in my car, and it worked right away, the browser wouldn't load pages, but I did sign into Google, right after I brought the phone with an upgrade.

Well got my G1 WOOT!.....But of course,the data hasnt kicked in yet so I'm stuck at the sign up/sign in to google:mad:.....its been 18 hours that the data service was put on my account....I just hope it comes on soon so I can enjoy the phone....

48 hrs from its provisioning but it takes several days to get to you so it should be online day 1 you have it

Just got up,dunno why I just woke up around this time lol But I checked & woot! it works now :D and am now enjoying my new G1!Thanks for the help guys!
