View Full Version : Can we turn down the swear filter one notch?

:)
In another post where I was talking about an aircraft, I notice the swear filter bleeped the word for the place up front where the pilots sit....the ****pit.
Seems like the gain on that filter might be set a wee bit too high.

It's that fact that people will use those words in an offensive manner. They are stock words with vBulletin.

Yes but a properly constructed regular expression will eliminate the bad usages while the proper usages remain intact.
Of course, then users will resort to using splitting the word using _ or some other character (eg "s_h_i_t" is accepted).

It just seems to me like this forum is built around accommodating first graders. We're all adults, we all use the language. Everything has to be so proper and politically correct. I come to this forum because it has good coverage of G1 news, but I don't feel comfortable enough here to hang out and chat. I don't mean that swearing is essential to relaxing, it just feels to me the forum has to loosen up some.

Yeah, I have a c0ckerspaniel, crazy I would have to spell it with a zero instead of an o... Filtering out reality for the sake of children who shouldn't be browsing the internet without their parents consent and approval is kind of silly if you ask me. We are protecting people from things that, obviously, their own parents do not take the precautions to protect them from.
But, if that is what the forum administrators feel is necessary to run a tight ship, so be it. I can refrain from using "inappropriate" language. It just seems to cross a line when I can't mention what type of dog I have without it being censored.
I will end this tirade with a quote from Talib Kweli "why curse, language is immerse in vulgarity".
Take it as you will, I take it to mean you don't have to use words that are generally considered "offensive" or "vulgar", and you can still instill the same reaction as if you had said "f*ck you!" When your literal words could have been "Go eat a pile of stinking dog poo you retarded donkey faced moron!". Which seems more offensive to you?

Are you serious? You think this is about kids? This is about anyone who wants to participate in an internet community free of profanity. Why would that be exclusive to children?
I am not offended by vulgarity in general but I just had to call that narrow view out. You can't sum up the reason for filter's excluding adults and putting it on unsupervised minors. That is ridiculous, at least to me. Maybe that makes me ridiculous and you right though?

Whoa guys, take it easy. Profanity isn't allowed in 90% of the forums on the internet, so why should we be one of the others and allow it. This is a whole big community and profanity is something that we won't allow here, it's just that it's not always accepted.

I think that actually even having a filter makes this an actual issue. If someone goes around dropping the f-bomb on a modded forum, he will be called out by the more adult crowd, "Calm down bro". In a filtered forum this is blocked out so the person can endlessly drop the f-bomb without repercussion because it's already blocked by the time someone else reads it. I was a member of a community where there was not a filter, a la exhibit a, where the person would be called out and if they couldn't get their repetitive swearing in order, they'd get banned.
At any rate, it's not my forum so **** it.

I'm attempting to understand your logic, however misguided it may be.
How can the use of filters be a issue? Thats like saying "The reason we have rules and laws is an issue". In any society (or internet forum) its not up to the members to become Judge, Jury and Executioner. Thats the job of the Moderators. Its the members job to report the offense to the mods and let them handle it. If you see a crime being committed do you round up a posse and go after the guy? No! You call the police and let them handle it.
I think a lot of you are getting confused with the reason why the filters are implemented. Its because this is a family technical forum pertaining to Android, and they feel that there is no reason for anyone to use that kind of language here. Sure you can make innuendos and spell your way around the filters, but your taking a chance on it. I for one am glad to see that this is a clean civilized forum. I enjoy having spirited and meaningful conversations with intelligent people who know how to get their point across without having to curse.
Before anyone calls me a prude and thinks I don't cuss, your sadly mistaken. I just do it responsibly. Everyone cries for the freedom of speech, but are you willing to take the responsibility that comes with it.

Scunthorpe. Lovely place in northern England. Not caught out by the filters though...
How come ****pit is?
Even if it is the decision of the forum moderators that we should filter swearing, I still think the original point stands - the filters are mistakenly matching the work ****pit and need to be improved.
It's all very well saying that swearing is not acceptable, but the solution is faulty.

Just chimin in here...
I am an adult that doesn't use profanity at all and sometimes I wince when other people curse around me. Most of them do say "excuse my language" because they know I don't use it and I don't want to hear it.
I say all that to say...I'm glad the filter is used because that kind of language is not necessary to get one's point across. There are a few forums that I wanted to participate in, but I didn't sign up because the language in those forums was ridiculous - and I'm talking about automobile forums.

Hmm... I belong to several motorcycle forums and only one filters. I rarely see profanity. Usually, when I do see it, it's in the context of a joke and is appropriate. However, I have noticed a great deal of incorrect usage. So, if we're going to police our thoughts, why not have a grammar cop? Quite frankly, there's more miscommunication because of poor usage than obscenities. Or, maybe we need to just plain bar people who use bad grammar -- or how about we just bar non-white people who use bad grammar? I mean, the ways to police our actions, our thoughts and expressions can take on all sorts of definitions.
You know, my son -- a straight 'A' student -- recently handed in his book report on "Into the Wild." He called it "bourgeois barf" and "pretentious". His teacher sent him into the Principal's to be reprimanded. The Principal called the teacher in and reminded her there was room for descent from the "popular view", and that after reading the report, he had to agree there was a lot of merit to my son's point. She said, "Well, what about the use of the word, barf?" He looked at her and asked, "What did you want him to use, vomitare?" I think the people that break out in a sweat over "bad words" doth protest too much.

i'm glad your son could voice his opinion, but what is pretentious about a young man taking off on treks and accidently dying from eating an easy misidentifiable plant? and the term bourgeois barf makes little to no sense in the context of describing the book. i honestly feel if there was more to this story then being sent to the principal for using those terms.

No, you're wrong -- the teacher loves this book and feels much as you do about it. She is also a devout Christian and my son has, on occasion, pointed out things about persecution of artists etc., by Christians in the past that she has taken exception to. And, truth be told, they generally have a good relationship. (She gave him an A). Sorry, but your need to rationalize a clear case of attempted censorship by suggesting there is "something wrong with this picture" because the teacher involved the principal, is pathetic. Are you thinking about your kids, maybe?
My son is far from perfect, but he's a straight A student, got into the college of choice, plays drums, guitar, base, piano -- is already composing and performing his own material. He doesn't hang out with the drug kids at school, but -- because he reads, uncensored by us or anyone else -- has a pretty decent vision of the world. Yeah, and I agree (as do many others, by the way) that "Into the Wild" is junk designed to pull money out of pseudo-hip pockets.
But the real issue here is censorship based on "bad words". So, does this mean if you don't like "bad words" you can't read Ginsberg or Salinger or Shakespeare? Now, what's wrong with that picture?

you know i began a response, but nevermind. you're right censorship is bad.

03-23-2009, 12:14 PM
The point I was trying to make is about the censoring of words despite the context they are used in. I think the example I used about having a cóckerspaniel is relevant. If people want to be profane they will be, regardless of whether they have to fill in the blanks with other characters to avoid the swear filter. But, when the indiscriminate filtering blocks out words that are usable in non-profane manners, it just seems to cross a line.
I don't argue with the use of a swear filter, I commend the forum administrators for attempting to run a tight ship. It is just something that goes a step too far in my opinion. Honestly, I never even noticed the filter until this thread was started. But to learn I couldn't talk about my dog, share quotes from poetry and music, our former Vice-President of the USA, etc. without resorting to underhanded character replacement tactics. Which, would be the same tactics that people looking to use profanity would resort to.
Perhaps my first post was too narrow, I apologize for that. However, I do feel that adults who don't want to see or hear profanity would have to live a very narrow life. Which is why I assumed that the filtering is for the sake of minors whose parents would rather protect them from reality. But, I don't know the reasoning behind instating the filter in such a strength that it has been.
On a side note, right now I am listening to LMNO (Leave My Name Out), a hip-hop artist who never uses foul language. However, some of his lyrics would be censored here, due to the use of words that could be used in a harsh manner - although there is nothing harsh about his music.

+1 Daveid,
It's their choice. As I said, I belong to a number of motorcycle forums and most of the time no one uses "bad words." Basically, because they just don't care one way or the other. In fact, I never tried to use a "bad word" here except to mock the "cleansing" of the market (which they did instead of fixing the phone). It doesn't matter. For some people it just seems to matter a bit too much. I wonder why...
*susan*
03-23-2009, 12:51 PM
Here is the bottom line. This is a privately owned and operated board. In as such, if we choose to incorporate a filter to keep our boards family friendly, then that is our right to do so. I am sorry that you own a ****er spaniel and the **** is removed from it due to our filter. But, we don't want that particular word being used here, and the spam filter does not realize you are referring to the all American dog as opposed to a part of the male anatomy.
As for those of you who just want the filter removed because you feel the need to cuss, sorry, it is not going to happen. Intelligent people should be able to have a conversation and a good enough grasp on the English language to be able to express themselves without having to resort to swearing.
End of story.
