View Full Version : Pre partitioned SD Card for running apps on SD!

Would a pre partitioned sd card for running apps on the sd card be in demand? It could have a script on it to do the move automatically as well. Basically once it arrives in the mail you could have apps on the sd card in a matter of minutes!
What is a reasonable price? It would most likely be an 8gb sd card with a 1 gig ext2 partions ofr apps.
It could also come with options rooting your phone automatically and move apps etc etc

Well an 8gig class six runs around 20 bucks so what in your mind is reasonable beyond that... LOL if you can be objective and give me a realistic idea of what you would pay that'd be sweet...

the only reason i haven't rooted yet is because i see no good apps worthy of filling my phone up with. i'm also holding out that google or whoever the powers that be are will enable us to save to sd. but it would be nice to have the card. i'm not sure how long i'll wait on google. plus if we don't get stereo bluetooth in 3 months, i'm rooting, unlocking and selling it anyways. my ears feel so naked. i miss my headphones at work.

Wow. You're going to ignore this, but I'll post it anyway because no one is giving you this side of it: No way. $40? $50? For a formatted $20 (RETAIL) item??
I would have the concern that the only people who would be willing to pay that kind of premium for something like this are the kind of people who can't even figure out how to...well...format an SD card. --Which means a lot of people pissed at you because they don't have root, thought this would give it to them automatically, and want you to be their 24 hour tech support on their phones. And to find 250-500 people willing to pay you 150% markup? Best of luck. If you are buying in bulk, you should be able to make a decent margin just selling the things for a few bucks above retail for your trouble.
But since you're probably going to do it anyway, I'll just say, for your sake, I hope I'm wrong.

Did you read my op? It will be able to give them root as well. It will of course have to come with some light instructions. And yes i will be running tech support at my website. Which is actually already up and running for android related issues. And yes i will be selling unpartitioned cards just above cost to generate a profit. And it is not set in stone that it will be 150% markup. Those are prices that members are throwing out there. (Please keep doing so!) And designdawg i would never ignore you...

i bought my transcend 8gb class 6 for 13.99. i already have root so i would just need it for the apps on the sd card part. i probably would pay anywhere from $25- $30. the main thing im worried about is if you get a chinese wholesaler, what will be the quality of the product? i tend to stay away from all chinese/asian off branded memory/electronics because i have had bad experiences with them. they probably would have no warranty and if everything on them got deleted, there goes all my apps... music... etc...
not trying to knock your hustle... just trying to give you some input.:)

lo0ks like i might have to come up with about a grand to do the order i want. so i may just buy like 10 or 15 at regular retail to start and make sure those 10 or 15 customers are satisfied before i go buying a whole wad of memory cards from china....lol.
I will announce when i have the 10 or 15 cards cards and the prices. At that point the first 10 or 15 emails i get will get the cards. Hopefully those people will post here and let the rest of you know how things went.

that is VERY reassuring. then yeah... i probably would go for the $25-$30 price range.
you should probably have ones that have the auto rooting and ones that dont and the price should reflect that for those who only need the auto app part.

Yes, price would vary a little depending on the options.
Should i also offer 8gig and 4 gig? that would allow for some different pricing options.

I would say around $25 is reasonable.
Retail is $20 (at the max)
Wholesale I'm guessing will be around $17 ( + $8 for time and work per card)
The process is not real hard. A few downloads, a few renaming of files, a few updating.
I can see you selling quite a few at that price.
The only downside I see is this. These G1 users unknown to root access and how they will not receive OTA updates from Google. You (Birdman) would have to put up the files on your site and let them download it.
If they couldn't root their phone on their own, I don't see how they can update it on their own via a website (it is essentially the same process... download file, rename, enter commands)
Overall I think your business proposition is well-thought out. I won't buy it as I know how to root / apps / caches / to SD, etc... but I'm not the ordinary G1 / CPU user.

To solve that i was thinking of just preinstalling the jf updater app from the market right in the apps folder so it will be ther once the phone is up and running rooted with apps on the sd card.

Yes, I did read the original post, but root is not automatic. "Light instructions" is all there is now. Rooting is easy. --Unless you're one of the people for whom it's not. Unless I've missed out on a lot of developments, the only thing you can do to bring people closer to having root is to download the files for them. They still have to do the rest. This is what I'm saying is not automatic and will still be off-putting. --Especially when it comes to unmounting, re-mounting, etc.
I just think it sounds like a big headache (for you), and when it comes down to it, I could see you running out of people willing to pay that kind (any kind) of premium really quickly. Don't want to be left holding the bag of hundreds of cards, and if you started selling them for cheaper later, thinking you might have been asking too much, word will get out and everyone who bought it originally will be mad and wanting a refund. I'm just playing devil's advocate here.
Good luck.

i can respect anyone who can disagree but in a "helpful" way.

Well, what I need is more people like YOU, who actually recognize that I'm trying to be helpful when I pose the other side of things. :) I do this every day at work, and it is seldom well-received. It's what I get paid to do, and it's why I'm where I am, but people don't like to hear it. :) Oh well.

It's not all it's cracked up to be, Gasbot. I run an animation/post production studio, but I'm also the corporate "realist" most of the time when people aren't being realistic. Not always a popular spot to be in.

Ok, here is the test run. I'm just going to do 1 and see how this goes.
You can have whatever options you like.
The card is a transcend 8gb with a one year warranty. It will be partitioned with an 1 gb EXT2 partition(That should be all the room you will EVER need) and the rest in FAT32 for your normal storage. It will have a script on it that when run will transfer all your apps to the sd card for you. I will provide the buyer with my full name, home address, and phone number. I will give a full refund if necessary. I will give personal support at my website and also will take phone calls to help. None of this should be necessary as the process only really requires one step.
The buyer also will have the option to have all caches moved to the sd card and or provide root access with a few simple directions.
I only require that this first purchase be 30 dollars. Bids will be accepted. If there are multiple bids the card will go to the high bidder. Bidding ends tonight at 12:00a.m. I will then contact the buyer with my personal info and the pay pal link. The buyer then has 24 hours to respond or I will contact the next bidder in line. The payment will be through my pay pal business account. PM me or shoot me an email at birdman81484@gmail.com.
I will post again in a few days with a few more cards.
