View Full Version : Site needs more stickied threads or FAQ

There's a 'FAQ' link in the "toolbar" (or whatever VBforum calls it), but none of the FAQ entries are remotely useful for every day use. There are more and more threads about "can I run a G1 without a data plan", "what is root?", etc that could be answered in the FAQ (or by searching, hopefully users will consult the FAQ before posting and being ridiculed).

Isn't that what a FAQ is for? Is the FAQ modifiable at all or is it something that comes stock with very VBforum installation?

Also if the "create thread" button brought up a page with a pointer to the FAQ, I believe that would prevent a bunch of these repeated threads.

The mods should do this. Also a mass off topics post deletion should happen. That's a mods job right? look at any of the super long 1000+ post threads and there is so much chat room chatter it's insane! Cut those threads make new stickys for each build of firmware (jf, haykuro, dude of life, and official t-mobile, and uk builds) and mod the boards to streamline these repeated questions. Sticky those and a stickied faq with links to each problem. Lets make this board more efficient!

If you need help with questions to link to for the faq I'm sure many here will help. Just ask. I think you should start with a suggested questions for faq page so we can get the most common questions out of the way then apply them to a main faq that evolves with more easy to get to links to threads made specifically for the answer. (Links so the faq page doesn't look too intemidating.

how would you draw this line? say someone cracks a joke. say someone says hi to someone else. i agree, chatting up the topic threads isn't cool, but i don't want to be a total ass about keeping things brutally on-topic. AC isn't sterile. it's human. agreed that we should try to keep it reasonably organized, and faq and/or knowledge base need work.

That's why we have off topic and chat threads. Sure a few here and there comments are ok but once a thread completely goes off topic, time for a lock.

Are you freakin' nuts?!! Some of those off topic and chat threads are not only classic, but for some of us, the reason we come here as often as we do. I'm glad a lot of people on this board are really enthused about Android and I am just as pleased a great amount of people are having the times of their lives immersing themselves in rooting, hacking, modding, and pleasuring themselves with their phones, but let's slow way the f#$@ down when we start talking about closing threads and interfering with the community members expressing themselves.
I have been here since before any of us had a G1 and can you guess what the hell we did then? We friggin interacted with each other and had a lot of fun getting to know each other. That is my definition of a "community". Now it seems like every single thread is about a new build or update. I am waiting on the official cupcake. Rooting does not interest me at the moment so I choose to not read those threads. Not bitch about other members who have actual conversations.
Bottom line.....you want efficiency and organization of all things Android? You want quick access to specific information to solve your latest root problem? See you at xda.
End rant.

I have stated this before, and will again. Many people are drawn to this site due to the Android platform, which is wonderful. But once here, many make friends and enjoy interacting with one another. That is why this is such a great "community".

As for the knowledge base and FAQ's, I do not disagree. I have just promoted constellanation (http://androidcommunity.com/forums/members/constellanation/) to our new scholar lead. I am sure he will be adding a few people to his team and working on improving the knowledge base and FAQ's. Please give him time to get used to his new role and get things going, I am confident he will do a great job.

FAQ I'm down for that. But I have no problm with the way things run right now. I log on everyday and not just looking for awnsers on the os. Its like sussan said. U come on here and u make friends. I agree it could use a lil more organization but I love this site just as it is. I'm not disagreeing with the idea but so far so good

have you ever tried to say hi or joke with anyone on the tmonews forums... i remember going there way back when we were going crazy for shipping info and let me tell ya it wasnt pretty, this place we have here is not your typical tech/phone forum its a community its good its bad its drama and its fun ( i remember the g1 is shipping thread it was massive and a great distraction) so if ya want a library of information hit up xda... but if ya want a place to chill have fun and meet intresting people then this is the place ..... sorry for my rant i just woke up and saw like 4 threads on what this place should be and 1/2 the time its from people who havent been here from the start :)

I think of AC as the more laid-back version of Android via XDA.
Forums at XDA get to point where there are specific formats for your thread titles.

We don't really discuss anything here really. Light chatter about opinions.

1. root
2. builds/radio
3. G1 in regards to data plan
4. cupcake.
5. why was my thread closed?
6. MMS don't work.
7. needs more cowbell...

iono just throwing up ideas.

Yep I agree needs vast improvement (referring to faq and knowledge base), wheels are slowly getting in motion...

In fact if people would start listing the things that they feel should be listed (how to root, move caches etc) that would be a great start

Why does the poll only have 'YES" as an option?????????

What's the purpose of the poll then????

Also, I like the interaction between people on the threads (when it is on topic) such as Dr. V and those (there are a few) who jump in and they all try to diagnose a problem and they all report their findings and figure out something that helps us all!!!!

The XDA forums are very sterile and not friendly... like a visit to the proctologist (Not that I've had to do that....yet) and here it is like walking into your friend's living room to work on my phone and learn something new. Just this week, I've learned to put my Apps2SD and Customize my Boot Image. Two things that I'd wanted to do for a while, but didn'y quite understand.

I think that the stickies and new forum headers will only help OUR community out in the long run!!!!

Congrats Constellation!!!! You've always been informative and funny! You are an A$$et to this community!!!!

That's totally funny. Icky, was it "yes" & "no" originally? I can't be that unobservant. Or maybe I can...?

No, it's always been Yes and Yes... because it's A Good Idea(tm).

Anyone thinking otherwise is clearly a communist and should be dealt with accordingly.

I never said take the fun out of the community. I'm just saying there needs to be better control over threads. If you want to chat all day then open up another tab in the chat topic area and chat away. Check the other thread you're watch inbetween and post accordingly.

An example of overboard off topic chatting would be, lets say in the haykuro thread about his updates and builds. I go there to see whats going on with the biuld and if there are any updates, only to read 3 pages about how someone should get a HD tv. Or another time when I find out who ray j is dating. I'm only talking extreme off topic like that. The mods say something but do nothing.

If I didn't love this community then let's be real, I wouldn't be posting here. I am!

At Least The People Post Here...Unlike Visitors Who Just Download Stuff Without Saying Anything Or Those 19000+ Account Just To Download Stuff. I Think Almost Everyone's Reasonable And I've Seen Many Sites Be 10(2-Squared) Times More Unorganized.

I love the feed back in this thread...

This is the reason why it's called Android "COMMUNITY"

It was formed to make all types interact and feel welcomed. -Good or Bad!

It shows we're passionate about the community and want to make it better. How many forums want to do that?

Fwoooooooosh!!!!!

Sorry I had to.... Though there are only two options both being "Yes" because there really is no arguing this point. This has been needed a long time coming.
