This has also got me thinking about the other comment about old hardware being in-compatible with new updates:
It seems like at least some of the Cupcake 1.5 build is specific HTC software, eg. Exchange support.
I would guess that there will be a set of guidlines for minimum updates for each version (such as the vk) but these can then be added too by the carrier, hardware manufacturer's etc.
It will be interesting to see what the official T-mob version of Cupcake is like, since the only G-1 users with cupcake at the moment are rooted, and running the HTC version
