That's because it is!
The $24.99 plan currently has 400 texts included.
The $4.99 text messaging plan currently includes 400 texts, not 300.

is this just for new users or does this effect exisiting contracts?

I'm sure it's just for new customers or those changing their plan. I can't see them changing current customers plans. That's not nice. Especially when your in a contract.

I was new to T-Mobile, came from Verizon, but I have a buddy that has been with Tmob for a long time and when he asked about grandfathering they told him no way... That being said it can depend on the sales person and the person asking. My sister gets broken phones replaced and upgrades all the time because she knows how to find the 'nerdy' sales guy with no prospects and flirt with him just right... I've never been able to pull it off...I would say it's because I don't have boobs, but I've been told I have nice man-boobs, so I assume it's because I don't know how to flirt...

You still have wifi with the G1. Take advantage of VOIP on the G1 and you guys have unlimited talk when you're near wifi and your regular plan (minutes) when you aren't. You don't need to pitch the G1 just because you pitch the data plan. You can still use it and save money. Install some VOIP software from the market and learn to use it before pitching your data plan.

that is a good idea, guess i just wasn't thinking of it...i'm assuming the phone will still boot if it's not assigned to any number, since you can't have it unless you have a data plan...

I called T-Mobile before I posted and was told that I would be grandfathered as long as I didn't change my plan. A new phone wouldn't affect it either, just making a change to the plan. He said that he would even note that in my files.

You can use the phone just fine without a data plan. Lots of people here do it. You can use it with a T-Mobile calling plan. The data plan is not necessary.

Just be careful: Unless you are rooted, if you wipe your phone and you do not have a data plan, you will not be able to re-register with Google. When G1 first came out, this was not a problem for my kid's phones, but now they cannot be registered without a data plan. The workaround is to borrow a sim with a data plan long enough to register the phone.

Yay for WiFi!
Oh; if you have cupcake, it appears that you can delay activation 'til when you could activate wifi. (link below ;p )
