You have to pay $130 regardless of what happens?

Wow, were the terms not disclosed in the paperwork or form signed? That sucks!

Deductibles on insurance are pretty common practice. If the $130 deductible is too much, let's do the math:
The G1 full price, brand new, no contract is $399.99. If you have insurance on it, it is $5.99 a month for the number of months you owned the original +$130. Subtract the deductible from the full price of the phone and you are left with $270 to spend on monthly insurance dues before it is no longer worth it. Divide that by $5.99 and you are left with 45. After 45 months the insurance is no longer worth having. Considering that if you signed a 2 year contract you are eligible for another full discount after 22 months I would say that you are saving yourself a lot of money in the long run.
But, if it's not for you you can always pay $400 for another phone.

Swizz, that's a good way to look at it.
I like the T-Mobile Ins just for peace of mind and the fact that they cover theft as well as damage.
I think it has a lot to do with the retail value of the phone; the G1 is $450 without a contract, so the deductible is more than a regular $200 phone.
My roommate just paid AT&T a $120 deductible to replace her Blackberry Bold with a broken screen.

having the insurance also covers hardware problems, if you do not have the ins. and something is wrong with the phones internal problems they will not change it out for FREE!!

I bought a G1 just 6 months into a new contract and only paid $159.00. I don't know who's paying $400.00 for the phone. Insurance is just another rip off.

You may have gotten a sweet deal on the phone, I got one myself. ($150 plus first month bill). But, just for fun, why don't you go to your local T-Mo dealer and ask them how much it'll cost you to replace your lost G1? I can guarantee you it won't be $159. Once you get a line, you cannot get another deal like that until your contract is up, so without insurance, if you need to replace your device, it will indeed cost you $399.

All you need to do is ask for loyalty support and they will try anything to keep you as a customer.
