Digital zoom same effect as shoot and crop, but the action is one click and realtime preview helps compose your photos!!
Review:
4/5 star rating, This is a very simple and neat camera applications with new "digital" zoom effects along with a neat animation shutter effect just like the iphone or palm pre now we have it on our android. Whats neat about this app that sets it from others is the ability to change shutter effect skins to your liking and the skins are FREE

Isn't digital zoom not very good?

Correct. Digital zoom is just increasing the size of pixels. You're not really zooming anything. The G1 does not have a zoom lens, therefore you've got what you've got. Anything else is just an electronic trick that will decrease the quality of the photographs.

i think this app should have the zoom, a long bar that goes across the bottom, that circle in the middle you gotta twist around 80 times doesn't do it for me

An old trick, but so true! The best any software could do without a zoom lens is to split the pixels into smaller segments and take an average of the surrounding pixels' colors to approximate a smoother image, but in the end, it's just bigger and fuzzier.
In fact, a good example of this is when you zoom in on an app like Google Maps Street View... You're zooming in on the picture, yes, but you're limited by the resolution of the original image, just like with digital zoom you're limited by the maximum resolution of the camera.

This is tight - I love it.
Custom shutters, cool animations, borders, really quick and easy to use.
One to watch definitely ...

Phone cameras are only useful on a night out when you can't be bothered to bring a decent camera with you, they aren't for the photos of a lifetime that you can remember when you're sitting in your rocking chair with no hair left...
This app looks fun with the custom skins, but I'd still prefer to wait for something with exposure compensation, multi-segment metering, exposure lock, white balance settings and such things (which will probably require a dedicated image processor :( )

You could be waiting a long time, but yeah, that would be pretty cool!
In the meantime, I am enjoying the freedom of having a digital zoom as it help me with composition.
Also even though it doesn't capture any additional detail, you can see additional detail whilst previewing that you wouldn't otherwise which sometimes helps you to take a picture at the right moment.
Obviously I would prefer optical, but we can't have it all!

I think "digital zoom" is the most useless feature in the entire world. Upload the picture to your computer; enlarge it; and crop it. The effect will be the same, and you'll be equally displeased with the results either way. If you don't have an optical zoom, you really have no zoom at all. I wouldn't slap somebody in the fact for using digital "zoom," but I certainly wouldn't pay extra for the "feature" either.

Saying that digital zoom is useless just because its not optical is like saying 3g is useless just because its not broadband.
Sure its not as good as optical, but it is still useful and helps compose pictures in realtime rather than having to spend time doing a crop later on.

That is the worst analogy I've ever read. For starters, 3G is broadband. Secondly, digital zoom doesn't accomplish anything. Digital zoom is equivalent to having a 1280x1024 display and a 400x300 pixel image and telling any image viewer to display it full screen. That's what digital "zoom" does. It doesn't bring the object 'closer;' it only enlarges it, and that comes at the cost of clarity.
P.S. Next time you correct me with an analogy, try coming up with a better one than, "Saying that cheese is different from beef is like saying a watch is different from a clock."

ok calm down on the analogy - I'm just saying its better to have something which is half as good as something else, rather than nothing at all.
And if a photo output is about 2000 pixels wide, but the preview screen is 480 pixels wide, then you would see more detail with a digital zoom in the viewfinder during preview - admittedly no additional detail in saved picture.
Anyway to get this thread back on track, Camera ZOOM is now my photo app of choice and not just for the zoom either - its got some cool lens effects and skin packs, so much more customisable than SnapPhoto. Also devs are doing lots of updates, so its keeping me happy :):)

IMO digital zoom on the G1 is good for one thing. Taking a full screen picture, and keeping it for viewing on the device with no modification (and no regard for quality). It's a great phone, but it's still a phone limited by existing hardware.
