Hi guys!

I'm new with android, I already signed up new acct with android market and be able to buy G1 phone for dev at google site ($399). My question is: can I buy an unlock G1 phone at ebay (used phone but cheaper) and use it for develop android app?

I'm having contract with Verizon, can't switch to T-mobile at this time. I think I can buy any android G1 phone (lock or unlock) and use it for dev software. Is that true?

Thanks for your help.

you can buy a used g1 on ebay , root it , flash an adp(android developers phone) based build , and make it a developers phone !

You should be able to buy the cheaper phone and if it's "Rooted" with a ADP ROM, you should be able to use it for developing.

I'm sure someone with better knowledge of that, will chime in to verify what I said.

i'm guessing that it probably would be cheaper to buy an unrooted used phone and then root it.....
if i was selling a rooted phone , i would probably charge a little more for it ;)

Yeah I agree (we kinda said the same thing)

But that's what I meant... Buy the cheaper unrooted phone, then they can "Root" it themselves.

How easy to "ROOT" it? Please point me to the right place so I can learn to ROOT it before I purchase the phone on eBay.

Thanks a lot

You should really do some research on rooting and all the different roms available . There is an over-abundance of info on this very website !

No, an unlocked G1 phone means that you can use it on any network provided it uses a sim card (i.e T-mobile & At&t).
Keep in mind though that if you are using At&t make sure that it says it will work for the g1, because if not you would have to purchase an unlock code and pay at least 23$.

A rooted phone on the other hand is more like a jailbroken device. You can do more with it and there are plenty of threads around her about root.

Im planning to sell my rooted g1 soon, starting off with .99 cents on ebay myself so good luck on buying one.

Thanks! So when you root your g1 that means you void the factory warranty, the same with unlock it, right?

I just won the auction at ebay for the brand new HTC G1 phone. If I just want to use it for developing then I just need to ROOT it (no need to unlock), right?

yes , warranty void !
BUT , you could always flash the rom back to stock ;) without problem

Can you tell me what ROM you are using for your phone?

According to the ROOT guide, he recommended the JesusFreke version, can you tell me how good JesusFreke is

Thanks

unlocked means it is sim unlocked. meaning you can use it on most gsm cell providers network.
