Does it matter if I get the t-mobile HTC store brand or one of ebay?

It shouldn't matter. I use a generic one myself.

I called up and asked about the cables, and it seems like over here they don't have many to sell separately. I decided to try a cable I had lying around and it worked fine. Why should I pay over the ods for one? I'm guessing the person I spoke to didn't know that you can use any mini-usb cable.

You can use the standard mini USB for powering up your phone, but it can cause problems with the music program and when up/down loading data to your computer... also I have a theory about it messing up when you have the multi-end adaptors... and the studdering music player....

no problems using any standard usb cable for data transfer. USB only relies on 4 signals: power, ground, usb data +, usb data -, which is available on any generic cable.
i prefer using cables with ferrite beads to protect against data corruption, but even the standard HTC data cables dont have ferrite beads.

You probably have a USB cable just laying around. I know I have a ton of spares.

The HTC cable is a usb with extra connections for things like mic, headphones and external audio controls.

I'm using the standard one and also use an old Nokia cable, they both work well.
