Ok I'm not a developer but I'm interested in the Dev phone. Mainly because I'm on AT&T and the Dev phone is completely and totally unlocked. And the with the cost of the phone and the price of an unlocking company I can trust it comes out to the same price. And I can still buy all the apps from the Market (something I can't do with an unlocked G1). So my question is why isn't the Dev phone recommended for non-devs and if the OS is unusable for me can I get the regular G1 OS on the phone and if I can will that take away my ability to buy all the apps and will it lock my phone. But it would be even better if I could get a stable Hero OS on it. So are any of these things possible?

ok you asked so many questions that i got really confused.

anyone can buy an adp phone BUT you will have to sign up a dev with google (25 dollars) you dont really have to be a developer tho.

or you could get a regular g1 cheaper . root it with an adp build , and you have a developers phone !

Ok sorry if my post was confusing. The main thing I wanted to know is why the Dev phone is not recommended for non-devs (I'm not a dev and dont want to be 1) like it says so on the website. The reason I want to buy it even though I'm not a dev is because its completely unlocked and it will cost the same for me to buy a G1 off ebay and unlock it and I can trust this and I can still use the complete android market (Which is something I cant do on a regualr unlocked G1). And I realize this is what this website is all about but I have no idea what any of this stuff you guys are talking about is, rooting? I know alot about cell phones as is but not like code and stuff like that.

Uhm thank you but that doesn't answer my question. And just to make it clear I DO NOT want to be a developer.

You really don't have to be a developer to use ADP. you will be able to use the market and all the goodies that you need/want. this sounds like your best option. I dont trust buying electronics from ebay.

Ill try to explain rooting as easliy as possible. Basically rooting is a way for root user to have complete control over the phone. by rooting we no longer recive google/ tmo OTA updates. instead we use independent devlopers versions of android.

I do belevie that the ADP phones will not recive OTA updates therefore you would have to do updates on your own(dont let this stop you from getting the phone they are easy to do and we are all here to help eachother.) Also by doing the updates yourself you get the best roms currently avalible.

hope this helps if not feel free to ask more questions

and WELCOME TO AC

Ok thank you. Would I be able to put a Hero rom on it? (if you know where I can get a stable one that would be great)? And what are some other benefits of the phone for non-devs of there are any.

you would have to update the radio and spl.(there is a risk that you could brick your phone) i found it to not be worth the hassle. If you are looking for a device that runs hero i belevie you can order an unlocked htc hero online if that is what you are looking for. but if you arte looking for a super fast rom that is reliable i would recomend cyanogen (whos i use).

other benifits Apps2SD, wireless tethering, there are many more benifits of an ADP phone. its worth having it.

Is the only dofference between cyanogen and the regualr android that cyanogen is faster? Or does it change the look of android too?

it changes a couple of things,
right now it has 5 homescreens instead of stock 3
the wallpapers are different (sometimes)

but for the most part you have a lot more options for customization then you would with stock.

its faster and has more features in his release to day he included global search from doughnut. it dosent change the look but you can find different themes to put on it. there is a hero theme that i use every now and then.

Ok I just have one more question. I just found out my friend just bough a G1 but he's switching to Sprint for work. I think I'm gonna buy it from him. It's just a regular G1 not a a ADP. Is there anyway I could get full access to the Market on it when I unlock it? And will I still be able to use cyanogen and all that stuff on it?

Shouldn't be a problem. What network are you going to use? If using AT&T you won't have 3g, just edge.

yes and yes. i would have him call t mo and get the unlock code b4 he cancels. (easiest way to get it) then you will need to root the phone

here are the instructions i used
http://androidandme.com/2009/05/guides/beginners-guide-for-rooting-your-android-g1-to-install-cupcake/

then you can put different roms on it.

Tmobile told him because he terminate his service they could no longer give him the unlock code. Would I he able to call HTC directly and get the unlock code?
