I'm an AT&T user with an unlocked G1. Before I get going, know that I love my G1 and appreciate that it is much better than the free Nokia AT&T gave me years ago. That being said...

I want 3G so badly!

What are my options? What phones can run Android (I'm open to the possibility of flashing it, myself) and can use AT&T's 3G?

Shot in the dark here, but would the hero run 3g, since it runs something that doesn't work on tmob's 3g?

Nope. The Hero runs on European 3G frequencies, which are different than AT&T or T-Mo U.S. The only option might be a Rogers (of Canada) Magic, and then only if he lives in certain small areas where AT&T uses 850MHz instead of 1900MHz for 3G .

3G data service frequencies break down like this (I think):

850MHz and 1900MHz - North America, for 2G networks where voice and data are interchangeable. Which is why you can't answer the phone while using 2G (Edge) data service.
850MHz - some 3G data networks, mostly Rogers in Canada.
1900MHz -AT&T's 3G data network, but AT&T also uses 850MHz in limited areas.
1700MHz - T-Mobile's U.S. 3G data network, but T-Mo U.S. also owns 2100MHz bandwidth.
900 MHz and 2100MHz - 3G data networks for most providers in Europe and Asia, some other places.

So for now I'm pretty sure there's nothing much available, but AT&T will be bustin' out some Android hardware soon.

The only problem with waiting for AT&T to rock out some phones is that all of the phones I've read they are looking at offering don't seem all that great. Oh, well, I guess I'll just have to wait and see!
