I want to use standard headphones (ie iPod headphones) with my HTC Magic. I ordered a miniUSB to 3.5mm adapter from eBay but when I plugged in my headphones, it didn't seem to fit well. My headphones went in and made a clicking sound at the very end. No sound came out of the headphones. I tried several types of headphones and still no dice. The proprietary headphones that shipped with the phone work. I doubt the adapter is defective because I ordered two, and the same thing happened to both.
So what kind of adapter do I need? I'm thinking maybe a miniUSB to 2.5mm? I'm so confused. Please help!

So 3.5mm is what I need? What is 2.5mm used for then?

But why should it matter if it's for Motorola or HTC? It's standard mini USB to standard 3.5mm, no? Guess it does matter?

I saw that it was for Motorola but I didn't think it mattered. I thought it was standard mini USB to standard 3.5mm? Guess it does matter?

Could be a proprietary pin-out like Apple.

no the htc headphone adaptor has extra pins for the headphones, you can use a standard usb to connect a computer and charge though.

In case someone still needs this:
The correct adapter needed is an "Enhanced Mini USB" ( or EMU) to 3.5mm. EMU is rectangular with one corner angled off, and it's small enough to fit in a standard mini usb port.
Though a standard mini usb cable will charge the G1 (or other EMU device) and allow data exchange with a computer, the enhanced version has additional pins for stereo headphones out and mic in. Don't bother trying to hack a 3.5mm jack onto an "EMU to USB-A" cable. It will likely not have those extra pins attached (since audio exchange is not the purpose of the wire).
It's not a proprietary jack, but HTC and Motorola seem to be the only advocates. My G1 shipped with a short adapter cable allowing the use of normal headphones. It's pretty lame to ship such a device without one. HTC has since learned to just include a 3.5mm jack on their phones, after much public outcry I'm sure.
The Motorala/HTC pinouts are likely the same, if not you could split the wire in the middle, cross the appropriate wires and heat shrink it back together. I just saw a Motorola cable on Amazon for $1.39:

Best of luck.

Hey! friend the only solution to your problem is that you need to contact the original HTC store to get in a new piece of head phone for your slef.

Odd error. I just searched E-Bay for a mini-usb to 3.5mm jack and ordered the first one that came up, and mine works with no problems at all on my G1 using 2 different sets of SkullCandies.
This is the very fella

Hi ! for everyone I have the 8350i and have the Seidio audio adapter and it works great. It's a 2.5mm to 3.5mm converter with an in-line mic and pause/play button or answer/end call button. If you want more information about head phones so you should check in Google then you get adequate information

So, I wanted to try and use headphones when I play games such as Call of Duty on my ps3. Problem is the decent pair of headphones I have has a standard.... Like, iPod, headphone Jack.with My TV, not having a slot where I can plug it into, I was wondering if thee was something I could buy that would make my headphones usable on my tv.
Thanks.
