Looks like T-Mobile and Orange will merge. This is a great thing.

It means the two carriers in the UK that use GSM1800 (as opposed to the older GSM900 network O2 and Vodafone use) will become the UKs biggest mobile phone provider.

Orange and T-Mobile between them have possibly the largest UK coverage, and largest 3G coverage.

Vodafone, in my experience, have always seemed geared towards business users, and have horrendously expensive tariffs for normal users.

O2, in my experience, has the most unreliable network. I remember when I was a student many years ago and decided to use up my 600 free texts. Only around 200 arrived at the various destinations, of which 500 said they'd been delivered, and of which all 600 were used from my allowance - shocking! They also treated my partner terribly, refusing to give her a contract because she had "no credit history". Their prerogative of course, but T-Mobile gave her one no problem.

Orange, in my experience, have been consistently reliable, with good tariffs, great network, and decent handsets.

Of course, I hear horror stories about all networks, and stress again that the above is only my experience and opinion.
