Please do not kill me for starting another help rooting thread. I thought I did enough researching to be able to do this myself but I am obviously getting confused. I was doing searched on this site and XDA until I developed a migraine and had to give up yesterday. Anyway, I am trying to root my G1 from the CRC1 build and install the Cyanogen 4.0.4 ROM. I am using these instructions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=442480. I now have the RC29 image on my phone and I believe (if i did everything correct) I am at the point where I put the modified image on the phone. This is where I need help. Do I install one of the images listed on the instructions (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=442480) and then install the Cyanogen ROM or is this the point where I just install the Cyanogen ROM? Also, the instructions state to rename it to update.zip. Do I change it to just "update" or actually to "update.zip". The reason I am asking is that the HARD SPL is already named "update" on my SD card and when I try to rename the modified image to "update" it asks if I want to name it "update (2)". Please help as I am obviosly confused. Thanks.

Rename the spl something else or just take it off your sd . The file should be an update.zip form , but rename it just update because windows hides the extention .
You can go straight to cyans build . But you will have to alt+w( wipe ) before you update(alt+s) .

Bingo, that did it. I am now going to try to do the Cyanogen Recovery 1.4 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=3915123). From what I read it appears I download the image and save it my SD card and then go into the Terminal Emulator and type SU (press enter) and then type:
flash_image recovery /sdcard/cm-recovery-1.4.img
