:]
I pretty much learned a lot today in my little introduction to computer class tonight and I think if you don't know you might enjoy knowing.
Not saying I really know anything or am trying to teach anyone anything, but from what I took from the lesson.
We talked about how the computer works and the whole "FAT" format of things which was interesting, then about ROM which tells the computer what to do and what not.
Then RAM, and its a fun class because of my g1, mainly because I'm always making connections from what I've done to it compared to a computer and what you can do with it.
Technically its all just 8Bit technology. But still very fun.
But mainly what was interesting to know was that we talked about Microsoft, Apple, and Linux.
Microsoft makes money because it makes terrible products like windows 98, 2000, Xp, Vista, and continue to push out patched and updates which creates the whole "Oh this version will be what its said" And the market booms and booms and booms from people that keep buying there terrible products.
Mind you when Windows 7 comes out I dare you to call them and see if there phones and support are up, they ALWAYS have shut them down because EVERYONE in EVERY COUNTRY is calling and cursing at them at the terrible product or how they need help.
[I personally like what windows 7 is becoming UI wise, in relation to a phone its like HTC's new Touch Flow [was it?] compared to the normal boring Windows Mobile UI]
Then Mac's are interesting and a neat computer. They're pricey but they support you and back you up, you're mac broke? Take it to an Apple store they'll fix it right up.
Its always said that Mac's don't get viruses and that's not true, they're just as vulnerable as p.c.'s its just that Macs are a small target where as Microsoft runs the whole world and lets face it, if you could happily throw a grenade at a building would you throw it at a small sound building? Or a large shaky building that's supporting many floors? [Mind you you could do this with a good conscious knowing nothing bad would become of it]
Then Linux is just Amazing and free, it just can't be really mainstreamed because its from so many people all over the world that it can't really have a support service for it outside of forums and all.
:]
Anywho theres my two cents! Hope you enjoyed the read.

That's some interesting propaganda your teacher is feeding you there.

That's not propaganda. I've known that stuff for several years, and it's been proven true time and time again. Linux ftw!
Another little interesting bit about Apple and PC is how the "pc" market rocketed and apple didn't. It is very comparable to Android and the iPhone. Way back when modern computers were getting started, two companies, IBM and Apple, were competing. IBM, somewhat like google, told other companies how to make pc's and software, while Apple kept their mouth shut. So, as you would expect, a whole bunch of different PCs made by different companies were competing to create and sell their pc (sound familiar? 18 android phones by the end of this year. how many iCraps are there? Oh yeah, 1.), unlike Apple, who tried to sell their computers alone.
And for those who are blind enough to think Macs are invincible:

I guess you could just read in the beginning there was the command line, I think its in dt's sig.
But to say all microsoft products are crap and that apple will happily fix anything is a bit far feteched.
Case in point the 300 plus dollars they wanted to charge me to fix a known defective (they admitted it was faulty on there end) motherboard. And the 60 dollars to replace an ipod that crapped out after two moths.... yeah they'll happily fix anything for a price....

Most of Microsoft's products are very large, very bloated, and very unreliable. Granted, a lot of the problems from Microsoft operating systems are from malicious software or intrusions, there is still plenty that are completely Microsoft's fault. I still don't understand how a company so large could create such unreliable products. For example, Xbox360. How many of those get "red rings of death". It's a fair chance that if you have an Xbox360 that you will get one atleast once. I used to be a Microsoft fan boy but since then I have started to hate Microsoft. Apple is a better with customer service, but still not the greatest. They get to charge a whole bunch because there is no alternative.

I agree with that sort of. I don't use any microsoft products besides xp. Media player is easily replaceable with vlc or foobar. And there's tons of that out there. But as far as virus's run avast with spybot and don't go downloading everything off the internet and its a really solid os.
As for apple I once was a fanboy now I can't stand them.

Yeah, "In the Beginning was the Command Line" is a good read. Just google it, i took it out of my sig.
and I'd like to add that when I was (briefly) a teacher I would have been thrilled to have a student who was so engaged and excited by learning new stuff.

your teacher does not like Microsoft. He/she Sounds like a Linux fanboy cause they have no idea what they're teaching.
The reason why things don't work is because people are stupidand don't follow directions.
Um yeah, Apple invented copyright infringements. Without microsoft products, we would all be buying 20 thousand dolllar iMacs.

I don't understand this. Linux is a good OS. Anyway, there was only one little thing about Linux in his post.
Oh, and OP: Linux support can and has been mainstreamed, at least by several distributions.

No I'm saying with allthe bull**** the teacher has been feeding his or her students, it sounds like they really hate Microsoft wihout a valid reason. And NO microsfts support center will be open when 7 is released. If there are problems it's because computer manufactoers like Dell and HP keep installig bloatware on their computers to make up for the cheap prices.

Well, i agree that microsoft's support center being closed is dubious. However, i think it's pretty well established that windows os has some inherent problems that linux/unix doesn't have, and that the "cathedral vs bazaar" software development model is a strong argument. Microsoft's success is at least (more, probably) as much a result of marketing strategy as it is of a quality product. Yes, people (teachers included) can and do oversimplify things, but i'll be surprised in ten or fifteen years if microsoft has anywhere near the market share that it enjoys today.

I love the war between all the OS's...it keeps things interesting.
I am currently typing this on a Dell PC running Ubuntu 9.04...staring at my Asus Eee running eeebuntu 3.0...which just happens to be next to my wifes Dell mini 9 running OSX...If I walk into my living room I am looking at a Mac Mini which serves the same purpose that my Apple TV once did, there is a Dell D610 right next to it running XP pro and another Dell PC in my daughters room running XP Pro
...Last but not least...I have a Dell PC XP Pro in the closet in our spare room with all the external HDD's hooked up to it, basically serving as my small home network server...supplying movies and music to ALL the computers in my house reguardless of OS.
As far as support goes...as long as I have a working internet connection on at least one of my computers...i can access forums and find all the help I need...without AC, more than half of us would not be where we are with our G1's...and do you think you can call HTC or Tmobile and ask them for help???

Hmm, I smell a Microsoft fanboy that hasn't had his eyes opened yet.
I'll agree with you and say most computer users are stupid and don't know what they are doing. That is why they think Microsoft is good. That's what they've been told, that's the propaganda. They don't know any better because they haven't experienced linux.
I'll say it up front. Linux isn't for everyone, at all. I consider myself computer savvy and even I struggle with linux sometimes... but to say it is not as good as windows is horribly incorrect. On linux, one can do so much more than on windows... its really quite ridiculous how locked down windows is. And the argument that there isn't any software for it is bull. Most of the "windows" programs have been recreated (and often enhanced) and if they weren't, one can run them through WINE.
I have Vista on my laptop (dual booting Ubuntu) and I hate it. Vista can't do anything right. Its unreliable, slow, inconsistent, poorly programmed, etc. Don't say its the fault of malware, because it is not. Features that were in previous versions of Windows are missing. Aren't even in Vista. Like what? How about the ability to view .gif images without having to open an extra program. How about the ability to actually edit things without being assaulted by a barrage of UAC windows, questioning every little insignificant change that was made. How about the ability to put a computer in stand by and not have to wait forever for the wifi connection to be reestablished. Microsoft doesn't make good products anymore. It has so much control over the market that it doesn't need to. I hope Windows 7 changes this, but right now I see some real hurt in Microsoft's future.

All those points you have listed have already been adressed with Windows 7. Give it try
Most people will never try out Linux not only because they haven't heard of it but because of the market share that Microsoft holds with Windows.
I have no idea what you mean by Vista being slow, I've been dual booting with vista and OSX and used Vista majority of the time and never had it slow down or create any problems for me. Vista needs atleast 2GB of ram to proform correctly. Hence why 7 was made to run on low end hardware.
It really doesn't matter anymore. It's just a user preference and which ever one gets the job done.

@XDViPeR (http://androidcommunity.com/forums/members/xdviper/) my teacher hasn't told us which one is better, which one he likes, he talks about all of them.
And just so you can stop discrediting someone with a doctors degree while you try to support a product I already didn't like to start with, though still use, just understand my teacher has been working with computers since the start, he has programed, worked for very large companies etc etc.
He's about as experienced and well learned about computers than you are about breathing and walking.
And clearly I'm not drooling over him and his acomplishments or I would of sht out a long list of what he's done.
Sound good? Sounds good to me.
And besides Windows 7 looks good, but its just a beta.
I believe Windows Vista also looked good.
But what's this? They have at least 2 updates and patches a week?
Oh yea I forgot about that.

We all need to play nice in this thread. A discussion doesn't need to be an ad hominem argument.

if you like a product then you like it and theres no need to argue or convince someone that its better than the other product

Windows 7 has been RTM. So the final versions are all out. All products have updates and patches some frequent and some not. That shouldn't determine how safe the OS is or how stable it is.

The bottom line is I don't feel, as long with many other Microsoft users, that Microsoft has delivered what it advertises with every new release.
