A lot has been said in the wireless world about what life will be like in a post 3G environment. Fourth generation technology offers significant speed improvements and hopefully significantly improved technology capable of enhancing reception in areas that have been all too often problematic, say inside a building?! Sprint, AT&T and Verizon have all committed themselves publicly to fourth generation networks with Sprint leading the pack promising a Wimax rollout before the competition. However, our beloved magenta has been all too silent in their plans for post 3G happenings. We know that our parent company Deutsche Telekom has chosen the LTE path and has begun testing with that regard. T-mobile CTO Cole Brodman speaking at the Cliq unveiling (http://www.tmonews.com/2009/09/3g-upgrade-coming-soon/) promised 250 million pops covered by the magenta 3G network by year’s end. Also of note was the statement that T-mobile would begin upgrading to HSPA+ service by the end of the year as well. Where this will happen first and how long will it take to upgrade are questions we all want to ask and this Friday, we may get some answers. T-mobile SVP of Engineering and Operations Neville Ray will be delivering a keynote address at Yankee Group’s 4G-world conference. From the email I received, “The presentation will discuss T-mobile’s plans to begin rolling out or next generation network solution, HSPA+, before the end of the year. HSPA+ enables faster speeds and better performance for our customers and is T-mobile’s bridge to 4G.”

If it was to come, it would be the Major cities first - I'm sure (Like Philly;-)

Last time I checked 4G/LTE is not capable of voice just data, do you know if this has been addressed?

IMO they need to finish getting 3g rolled out and rework their rollout plan for 4g(if they do 4g)
i live maybe 5 miles from st. louis and all the other carriers have 3g except t mo

Hopefully they trash 3G completely and just move straight into 4G. I understand everyone wants faster Data, i live in Edge area sometimes G depending on weather, but which is smarter, to complete 3G or just waste no time and move straight into 4G. It would save money and provide faster access to 4G. I do agree that is sucks that T-Mo has so little 3G area but we do pay less than almost everyone else except for the new Sprint Plan.
It would be nice if things would speed up for sure but you never know these days, heck the last study by the Govt showed ONLY 63% of America has access to DSL! I live in Ohio and just recently did we get access to by DSL and we are considered lucky b/c so much of the state does not have DSL.
So lets just hope America starts wising up and gets on board with the technology of the future instead of making excuses. Oh and our internet at its fastest in the US is still 32x slower than Korea....and yes i know America is way larger than Korea and everything but hey we always find a way to stay on top.

Is that North or South Korea. I do agree we need to step up

South. It was highly industrialized by the USA a while back. Now they are a country of gamers.

HSPA+ connection has started in Philly, but I don't see any current T-mobile phones that support it. Correct me if I'm wrong.

It is capable of VOIP, absolutely. In stereo even. The next generation, when things go LTE, will be all VOIP.
That said, it's unclear at this point how much faster 4G LTE will be than 21mbps HSPA+, at least at first. In a few years, yeah, much quicker. And it's a kinda moot point for now anyway since there's really no hardware available yet that supports 21mbps HSPA+ much less LTE. Well, maybe a 21mbps USB 3G dongle or something is out there, but no phones. Not even the iPhone 3GS or the Nokia N900 I have on order. The iPhone only does HSUPA at 7.2mbps, the N900 manages 10mbps. AFAIK 10mbps is state-of-the-art for the next few months.

Yay N900, I tell you how the speeds are when they get out in Southern Cali....

well for g1 users (some) were literally half way there. if you in a 3g area (dallas for me) you actually have 3.5g speed. :) The G1 is faster than the iphone 3g. So were a little bit better off than some people. Unless you don't have 3g, then thats a whole different storry.

and also you will be way way better off than iphone users considering that G1 users are more likely to get flash on their phone than iphone users since apple doesn't want to cooperate at this point. but they will be forced to when their customers start going to other service providers with smart-phones that have flash.
the G1 is catching up slowly but surely along with android :)

thats not really true. The only city anounced to have hspa+ is philly right now if im not mistaken. The rest are only 3g speeds.
Plus no phones out for t-mobile now can handle hspa+ at its full potential anyways, but it is faster none the less.

well then either the iphone 3g isnt really 3g or the g1 is a little better than 3g
which one is it then?
because either way the g1 is faster than the iphone even here in dallas (with 3g of course).

a combo of less crowded 3g networks and your specific location. Plus AT&T has been known not to deliver on it's 3g promises in places before.

hmm well either way a g1 still kicks ass n'est pas?
and the g1 ends up being better and faster than the iphone

Im not gunna argue about the speed, but i have the G1 and the iphone 2g, and the iphone is definitely better at this point.
We need better android hardware to really get on the right track. The iphone 2g is what, 3 2-3 years old and its still faster than my g1.

In my area we are still rocking Edge or, sigh, less in some areas.
The snapdragon chip hopefully finally will get us where we expect to be today. A 1ghz processor would really start making things interesting. The real test will be how the new phones handle the web. Currently more and more websites give apps to make the site more accessible on the phone but you know what the sites that do not is where the REAL test is.
Of course the new android phones need to fix a few major issues,
1. Wifi antenna is crap, you have to be way way to close to pick it up.
2. App store expansion as well as better quality in some areas.
3. Better battery by far is needed. At least 24 hours of heavy use per charge is needed.
4. Apps2SD stock.
5. Larger standard memory.
6. Smoothing out some of the jittery movements of the phone.
I know you are saying but hey some of these are not in the control of Google. Well the truth is that the physical capabilities of the phone are JUST as important as what the phone does so they interact. The battery is the one thing that is out of the hands of the developer AND Google but you know what its the one real thing that cripples every smart phone on the market. The iPhone battery BLOWS and ours is not much better. It is 2009, heck we should not have to charge a PHONE every 12 hours if we use the internet a lot or play games a lot.
Its a great OS and hopefully it will become better and better but certain things must change both in terms of the OS and the developers of the phone because they are completely interdependent.
