View Full Version : How many shamwows to soak up the ocean

So occasionally we have to talk about something other than android phones....and this is one of those times....

So my brother wanted to know excatly how many shamwows it would take to soak up all the water in the oceans so here is what he did and his results. (he posted them on facebook. you can also follow him on twitter his screen name is mdhugo

"I attempted to figure out how many Shamwows it would take to soak up the ocean. My work and results are below: Assuming there are 36614237300000000000000 gallons of water on earth (http://oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/oceanwater_amount.html) and 97% of the earth is covered by some sort of ocean that means there are 35515810200000000000000 gallons of water in all of the oceans. (97 percent of 36614237300000000000000 = 3.55158102 × 10^22). The Shamwow claims it can hold 20x it weight in water. The only definitive number I can find for the wright of a Shamwow is 2.5 ounces (http://www.wicu12.com/news/index.vnss?newsid=6725&type=does_it_work). Given both of these items each Shamwow should be able to hold 50 ounces of water (2.5 times 20 = 50). Using my ocean calculations from earlier we can determine that there are 4546023710000000000000000 ounces of water in all of the oceans (35515810200000000000000 US gallons = 4.54602371 × 10^24 US fluid ounces).

Using the number of ounces of water in the oceans divided the amount each Shamwow can theoritically hold I come to the conclusion that is would take 90,920,474,200,000,000,000,000 Shamwows to soak up all of the oceans on earth (4546023710000000000000000 divided by 50 = 9.09204742 × 10^22).

this should be an interesting discussion.

Thats great and all but what about the Simpsons episode where Marige doesn't buy the cheap paper Towels and she ends up throwing like 50 into a gorge to soak up all the water?

I think using that product would be a lot cheaper and realistic.

if everyone in the world flushed their toilets , at the same time , including Iceberg , would the water level in the ocean rise ?

i did but judging by the evolution, the egg

Just be philosophical though the problem with Evolution is that if you took nothing inside a case and left it there a billion years nothing would come of it, no history outside of being empty.

Where as if you a steak in it there would be maggots, ants, flies, life, death, etc.

I think the overall analysis of the way humans judge life and death is just entirely wrong thus it can never be answered.

And if you look into it deeply you'd considering looking at Einsteins life.
What happened before him?
And what happened after him?

The whole entire surroundings and imaginations are decomposing and dying, we're all not getting any younger.

I say life is just a flaw in the cycle, look at the moon and other planets, don't support life, decomposing every second etc etc.

If there really was a beginning and an ending i would imagine at birth we would only grow younger over growing old and dying.

and don't be a smart ass and say if we grew younger we'd eventually turn into nothing and blah blah blah its a concept.

Wikipedia says:
The chicken or the egg causality (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Causality) dilemma (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dilemma) is commonly stated as "which came first, the chicken (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicken) or the egg (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Egg_(biology))?"
Chickens hatch from eggs, but eggs are laid by chickens, making it difficult to say which originally gave rise to the other. To ancient philosophers, the question about the first chicken or egg also evoked the questions of how life and the universe in general began.[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicken_or_the_egg#cite_note-0)
Cultural references to the chicken and egg intend to point out the futility of identifying the first case of a circular cause and consequence (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circular_cause_and_consequence). It could be considered that in this approach lies the most fundamental nature of the question. A literal answer is somewhat obvious, as opposed to the logical fallacy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Logical_fallacy) of the metaphorical (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metaphor) view, which sets a metaphysical (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metaphysics) ground on the dilemma. So, to understand its metaphorical meaning better, it could be reformulated as follows: "Which came first, X that can't come without Y, or Y that can't come without X?"
An equivalent situation arises in engineering and science known as circular reference (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circular_reference), in which a parameter is required to calculate that parameter itself. Examples are Van der Waals equation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Van_der_Waals_equation) and the famous Colebrook equation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darcy_friction_factor_formulae#Colebrook_equation) . Another example is calculation of thickness of roof of a tank or structure. To calculate the thickness requirement, we need to know the self weight of the roof, which is possible only by already knowing the thickness. This situation is solved by initially assuming the parameter and by repeated iterations converging towards finer

Yea its up in there, I can't say I really care but I've thought about it enough. I don't like Christians, or any other religious nut or claimer, but something can't come from nothing.

As a swine/human we see birth as a 9 month process
As a swine/human we see death in so many different ways.

It's just a human concept to be so into the "now" time of things and not consider the long hall of things.

Looking at dinosaurs and how the claim is that lizards are the modern day relatives and this and that. The majority of people see humans as humans and then angels for some dumb reason, we never see it as anything less or else.

Though if anyone would take a look at SImz hairy arms they'd think monkey! :p
haha.

I could go on about this with someone to participate but its up in the air and for the birds as far as I care.

But where did they egg come from?

(to play Devil's advocate)

It was laid by a creature that was evolutionary one step below what we would consider a chicken by today's standards.

And again about only thinking in the now, where did that creature come from?
Less and less and less to atoms and backteria to a creator.
But who created the creator?
Etc etc the dying universe life spans foes far beyond the span of our acclaimed sophistication

People around here used to raise them until the market took a dump. They let them lose and the climate around here is good for them. Several accidents a year with cars running into them.

Sandbag Houses

This sandbag house was built for a mere $6,000, making it affordable for low-income housing. The design also utilizes uncomplicated techniques- and was constructed with the help of its future residents who were able to gain a sense of ownership through the building process.
