I would love an app that enables the G1 to become a WIFI reciever like a USB adaptor for a laptop or desktop that enables users to access the internet via roaming wifi signals. For example let's say your comcast or verzion fios service gets shut off due to non payment (happens to us all) how are you gonna access the internet? Well you have a G1 phone but that's somewhat limited so let's use our desktop by connecting the usb cable to our phone then to the computer and use the phones 3G or wifi network to surf the web on Tmoibile.

Already avaiable, for the rooted phone there is Wireless Tether for Root Users,1.52, which is free. For non root users there is an app called PDAnet, which is a paid app.

PDAnet isn't on the Market btw. You have to go to their website. It also allows tethering to any data connection your phone may have, such as edge or 3g as well. I use it all the time to connect my laptop on lunch and I never bought the paid version. The free version seems to work just fine.

Agreed. I have used PDANet in many airports that charge $10 for their service and most of the cities I've done this in have pretty good 3G coverage (San Fran, Washington, etc.).
I've found that rooting is the way to go though. I was recently on a long layover in San Fran using my Wi-Fi tethering. The guy sitting a few seats over asked me if I paid for Internet access and I said that I was using my phone's 3G service. He asked if he could use it too and I jokingly said "sure, for 5 bucks". He reached in his pocket and handed me the money. I guess that 10 dollars was too much for him or maybe he didn't have a credit card. Either way, my slice of pizza was free that night. :D

that's awesome. reminds me of a guy at work showing me his sprint wifif device (i can't remember what its called) and i was like "ya those are cool, but i don't need it my phone does that" he then got really interested in my phone, and seemed a little disappointed that he paid extra to carry around an extra device when a phone could do it.
