Updates via wifi - G1

I know this question has probably been asked several time in these forums but with my quick little search I couldn't find the exact answer I was looking for. So I will be getting the G1 and I do not have the data plan. I'm fine with not being able to use the phone to its highest potential but what I'm wondering is if I can get all the G1 updates and still download applications while I'm connected via wifi.

im not sure about the updates, you can always download them manually and install them but YES you can use the phone on just wifi

YES YOU CAN, the only problem is the initial sign in because you need data to do it
