Hi Gang,
Very shortly (as in, less than 24 hours) my "new" scratch-free G1 arrives...and I need to unroot my current phone!
I'm running cyanogen with his recovery, haykuro's SPL, and the updated radio (from WAY back when).
I found this page for the dream file: http://code.google.com/p/android-roms/wiki/Unroot
I found this page for the original SPL: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=455860
Are these the most appropriate files for me to utilize?
Do I flash the old SPL first before I flash the dream file? Then what about the radio? And the recovery image?
I'm freaking out a bit here  but thanks in advance for your (whoever) helps.

I also noticed on that above page a link for and 1.0 system image....do I need to flash that as well??
Thanks again :)

djunio

yes I'm still stuck.
no matter what I do, I am stuck.
Try flashing back to the newest radio, then flashing the orig spl then flash dreaming
DrVeronica
10-07-2009, 06:06 PM
My phone isn't responding to camera + power, home + power, NOTHING......I flashed the radio first, like I was told, and I'm still stuck........
I am up $hit's creek here.............or would be taking a gamble handing back a somewhat rooted phone..................
djunio
10-07-2009, 06:11 PM
If its stuck that's far as they gonna go, they might not even check it but we probably can get it unbricked, put your card in the card reader, go to the adb u mentioned earlier then put them 3 files in the root of your phone, plug it n the usb while its hanging try to adb remount it.
djunio
10-07-2009, 06:15 PM
Also if you have linux or paragon erase your ext, deleting it might be good as well.
DrVeronica
10-07-2009, 06:53 PM
if I put all 3 files on there, aren't they supposed to be renamed to "update" ?
djunio
10-07-2009, 06:56 PM
yes, can you adb remount while its on the G1 screen, did you try to boot without the card in the phone.
DrVeronica
10-07-2009, 07:00 PM
I'm at another location right now, and am getting ready to download the sdk so I can do this...........I dump all "tools" files into an "android" folder, correct? I haven't messed with this stuff in MONTHS.
djunio
10-07-2009, 07:04 PM

no, leave the sdk on the desktop, tools should be in the sdk folder
DrVeronica
10-07-2009, 07:14 PM
then do I need the sdk to even do this? can't I just open c prompt and remount then?
djunio
10-07-2009, 07:17 PM
Not if you can use adb already.
DrVeronica
10-07-2009, 07:20 PM
yeah I opened up c prompt and adb ain't working, lol
djunio
10-07-2009, 07:25 PM
My bad lol, to use adb you need to navigate to the tools folder in the sdk first.
DrVeronica
10-07-2009, 07:33 PM
I could have sworn I'm supposed to dump the sdk tools into my "android" folder on my c drive, lol
damn I am so RUSTY, and I wish I had my laptop with me :( this would be somewhat easier.......
djunio
10-07-2009, 07:38 PM
You can if you want, it really doesn't make a difference where it is long as you can navigate to it from c prompt.
DrVeronica
10-08-2009, 12:59 AM

DrVeronica
10-08-2009, 05:17 PM
Ok, the phone that is working, will not adb remount. The phone is pointing to the x86 driver, which is in my sdk folder on my c drive
djunio
10-08-2009, 05:20 PM
do u got the box checked for debugging in settings/application/development
DrVeronica

djunio
10-08-2009, 05:52 PM
can u adb now
DrVeronica
10-08-2009, 05:53 PM
ok, the device still can't be recognized...
I'm at device manager, I see my htc phone, I select update driver, I point it to:
C:\android-sdk-windows-1.6_r1\android-sdk-windows-1.6_r1\usb_driver\i386
I'm told, "The best driver software for your device is already installed...Windows has determined the driver software for your device is up to date..."
Attached is a small disk drive icon with the "disk drive" next to it
grrrrr :mad face:
djunio
10-08-2009, 05:55 PM
the real test is to see if it recognize it in fastboot mode but first c if u can adb remount it
DrVeronica
10-08-2009, 06:04 PM
it's not :( again, I don't think my stuff is set up right in device manager :(
djunio
10-08-2009, 06:08 PM

10-08-2009, 06:08 PM

DrVeronica
10-08-2009, 06:10 PM
windows is treating my phone like a usb storage device
djunio
10-08-2009, 06:11 PM
can u adb remount it?
DrVeronica
10-08-2009, 06:17 PM
Alright, I'm in Device Manager, I see my my phone under "disk drives", with "usb device" attached with it.
I select "update driver software"
Browse my computer for driver software.
Here, I messed with 2 options
A) Search for driver software in this location --> so I directed it to that download on my comp, and I get:
"The best driver software is already installed..." same crap as before, with that disk drive message at the bottom
B) If I pick "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer", I click on "have disk" and point to, again, that driver I just downloaded, and I'm told,
"The folder you specified doesn't contain a compatible software driver for your device..."
djunio
10-08-2009, 06:18 PM
dont click on have disk, u have to browse to wherever u put it
djunio
10-08-2009, 06:21 PM
i have to go, ill be baclk later, if u get adb working on the fixed phone reboot it n c if u can adb remount it while its on the g1 screen, if u can flash the orig spl and radio from adb, these links should help u

DrVeronica
10-08-2009, 06:24 PM
Yes, and when I click browse, then next, a popup comes up and says, "the best driver software for your device is already installed"...it's like I can't override THAT!!!1
ok, thanks for your help :) I'll be around, trying to monkey with this
djunio
10-08-2009, 06:26 PM
uninstall it
DrVeronica
10-08-2009, 06:35 PM
Did that!!
Now here's what I noticed..............I had copies of "htc android" and "htc dream"....
"htc dream" was marked already as ADB (that was my previous phone), hence why I uh, COULD use adb in the past with such ease and no problems.
THIS phone, the new one, was being read as "htc android", so I uninstalled EVERYTHING of htc android, reinstalled for adb, and VOILA, I CAN NOW USE ADB AGAIN.
Sheesh, this was WAY freaking harder than rooting my phone the old school way months ago.....but all it took was 2 brains working, thanks djunio :)
So now adb works (at least for th new phone), and I'm gonna mess with the old one and see if I can remount that one....
DrVeronica
10-08-2009, 06:42 PM
ok :(
old phone on, no sdcard in, on G1 screen, and adb reports no device found :(
djunio
10-08-2009, 09:49 PM
ok, put your workn phone in fastboot mode and see if you can c it in your device manager
DrVeronica
10-08-2009, 09:54 PM

djunio
10-08-2009, 09:56 PM
i havent seen it n so long i dont know how it look lol, the one where u power on while holdn the cam button
DrVeronica
10-08-2009, 09:58 PM
yeah I got that going now, it's the screen you would see when using fastboot
and I DON'T see my phone in device manager
djunio
10-08-2009, 10:02 PM
ok, we need to get it 2 c it n fastboot mode, do u c the yello triangle or nothn at all, it should say android something near mass storage
DrVeronica
10-08-2009, 10:03 PM
nothing, no mass storage pop up nothing!
djunio
10-08-2009, 10:04 PM
correction, under adb devices in device manager
DrVeronica
10-08-2009, 10:05 PM
I don't even see "adb devices"
djunio
10-08-2009, 10:08 PM
that may b our way of getting un unbricked, but im currently have a brain fart, i think u need to install that driver i gave u but there has been a new development at the xda, some guy claims he unbricked, um bout to post what he did here
djunio
10-08-2009, 10:09 PM
I have the Rogers HTC Dream which I bricked this morning.
It got to the state where holding camera + power did not bring up the fastboot menu, and holding home+power did not bring up the recovery menu. All I got was the dreaded Rogers logo.
1) Take out the battery and unplug the USB cable and wait 20 seconds
2) plug in the USB cable
3) The second you insert the battery your phone will automatically turn itself on. Therefore hold the camera button down while putting in the battery.
4) The phone should start up (again a black screen + Rogers logo) and you should see a red box in the top left corner saying "FAST USB"
5) The phone appears frozen, but now you can use ADP to send it a recovery.img.
Code:
fastboot boot recovery.img
For me I installed the recovery.img from "Haykuro's initial root kit" available in step 4 of this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...73#post4280573 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=4280573#post4280573)
6) After the fastboot command is finished your phone should automatically reset, and enter the Cyanogen recovery menu.
7) Now install the custom ROM as before
EDIT: After following these steps, I can now start my phone using CAMERA + POWER to get into the fastboot menu just like before I bricked my phone.
EDIT #2: I am currently running my phone with the cyanogen 4.1.999 ROM, so everything worked out for me in the end. I should probably mention that I did not "brick" my phone by flashing a new SPL while still running an older radio.img, so Im not sure how far this method will get some of you.
DrVeronica
10-08-2009, 10:12 PM
ok but right now my computer isn't recognizing even my working phone while it's in fastboot mode :(
djunio
10-08-2009, 10:14 PM
try whats in my second post first, we'll work on that next
DrVeronica
10-08-2009, 10:15 PM
ok I'll do it now, brb soon
DrVeronica
10-08-2009, 10:19 PM
:( *sniff*
djunio
10-08-2009, 10:21 PM
nothn, did u take out your batt, then put it back n while usb plugged n and you holdn the cam button
DrVeronica
10-08-2009, 10:22 PM
yes, and my finger hurts, bad :( gonna try it again
djunio
10-08-2009, 10:25 PM
ok, last thing we can try, get your computer to c your phone while n fastboot, plug it, get it n fastboot, scan for new devices
DrVeronica
10-08-2009, 10:27 PM
dammmmmmmmmmmmmn it :( christ!
djunio
10-08-2009, 10:28 PM
still nothn
DrVeronica
10-08-2009, 10:41 PM
ok got it in fastboot, plugged in, scan for hardware changes, no changes :(
djunio
10-08-2009, 10:46 PM
i guess this is the brick wall, no pun intended lol, theres nothing you can do unless u have a Jtag cable with the proper software, i dont think they are gonna dig n c if u r rooted
djunio
10-08-2009, 10:46 PM
can u adb you working phone while its on the g1 screen, u may have to try a bunch of times, i do it all the time
DrVeronica
10-08-2009, 10:48 PM
yeah, it would kinda suck if they did and then I'd see an extra $100 charge, lol
DrVeronica
10-08-2009, 10:50 PM
yeah I got my working phone plugged in now, fastboot on, adb remounted about 15 times, no dice
how is it that it can remount when the phones on but not when in fastboot/recovery?
djunio
10-08-2009, 10:50 PM
that would b some bs but i have yet to hear of someone who was bricked that got charged, i think they are too lazy to unbrick it and they have too many n stock to care but they can unbrick it if they get it back to htc
DrVeronica
10-08-2009, 10:54 PM
yeah I've come across a few people who turned in bricked phones, one I know personally, and he has yet to be charged anything
I'm still a bit perplexed that this happen!! and it was right when I flashed the damn radio, not EVEN messing around with the spl!
djunio
10-08-2009, 10:58 PM
now that i think of the logistics of what bricks you while flashing the spl, it make sense to me now, your bricked because the new spl doesnt work with an old radio, so when u flashed it thats what caused it because the spl was still there.
the old spl can use any radio but the new one only works with the new radio
DrVeronica
10-08-2009, 11:03 PM
now why couldn't this have been figured out prior to me being told to flash the old radio first
...........................................
djunio
10-08-2009, 11:04 PM
was thinking i guess, we was always told radio then spl or u will b bricked, we need new rules for unrooting, spl first unless youll b bricked
DrVeronica
10-08-2009, 11:11 PM
yeah I'm not really worried about it.... they did stress that if the dot was red or the lcd was broken I'd get charged, lol but that's something that can be so easily seen
