It’s been a while since we’ve heard something REALLY BIG. Well the guys over at PhoneArena have recieved word from a tipster, that T-Mobile is about to shake up the status quo of the U.S. cellular (http://www.tmonews.com/#) industry. T-Mobile employees are being trained tomorrow for “Project Black”. This mysterious but catchy sounding name is supposed to be something so BIG for T-Mobile USA, that it is expected to lift T-Mobile out of 4th place among the nation’s wireless operators (Take that Sprint). PhoneArena has stated those involved in this have signed non-disclosure agreements, so this looks to be huge. Also their tipster also claims expect a 3G enabled BlackBerry (9700 (http://www.tmonews.com/tag/blackberry-9700/) anyone?) headed to T-Mobile by Christmas time. The tipster also bumped into an ex-Nokia Rep who revealed to him that, there will be 2 “N” Series Smartphones headed for T-Mobile USA early next year, one of them being the N900 (http://www.tmonews.com/tag/nokia-n900/) with Maemo5 (http://www.tmonews.com/tag/maemo/). He says to expect more high-end Nokia devices headed for Magenta in the future. It looks like T-Mobile subscribers just won the Lottery! Sound off in the comments!

HD

Same QWERY as the g1.

And I'll never need a new phone again.

I made a list a couple of days ago for someone asking what we need in terms of phones and my list was mostly what yours was plus some.

1ghz+ processor
HD with full integrated multitouch as far as iPhone has it
a MINIMUM of 2 days battery life, while keeping it interchangeable
Larger standard memory, at least 8gb standard
FAR FAR FAR better WIFI antenna, we need the WIFI range of a laptop
Little bit thinner
Better Browser, all phones need one, none are perfect yet

In terms of T-mo we need AT LEAST 3G everywhere and a much MUCH better cell network. We have the cheapest bills as of last year now its getting tough with AT&T having 10 numbers to call, Verizon having the same, and now Sprint has unlimited to everyone. T-Mo needs a better network with more calling areas as well as AT LEAST 10 free numbers if not everyone or 20 free calls. IF they want to compete they must at LEAST one up everyone else b/c we are in last place b/c of our crappy network when it comes to coverage areas.

After thinking about it and reading what others heard about "Project Black", not much different, I thought of what they could be doing.

To overtake another carrier they would have to be doing something gigantic like a merger. The big thing is that b/c they are training staff it cannot be a market expansion or something if it requires training staff.

I would also assume they are going to match or at least come close to matching Sprint's Any Mobile, Anytime plan.

This has me very interested as it sounds extreme if they really plan to move up in the network. Hopefully it concerns larger coverage area and larger data network.

The one BIG BIG thing I could really think of is an iPhone on T-mo. Considering what it has done for AT&T making them a huge power even though their network is junk. Its not great considering i love the android OS but I definitely think that it would be huge if they got the iPhone simply b/c of all the Apple fanboys that want one but hate the huge fees AT&T tags on.

Just spitballing some random ideas as I am for some reason super excited about T-Mo finally having big news. its been forever since they have done anything big. The G1 was the last big thing they did and that was 1 year ago.

Wait, I thought t-mobile was buying out sprint? http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/newsbysector/mediatechnologyandtelecoms/6180195/T-Mobile-owner-eyes-multi-billion-dollar-bid-for-Sprint.html

yes supposedly t-mobile is going to buy out sprint. doing this t-mobile will be the second largest carrier in the U.S. taking the lead in front of At&t...this right now is pretty much rumor and nothing will happen over night but i actually work at radioshack and there might be some truth to this rumor. i say this because before we started selling t-mobile we carried just sprint and at&t. and radioshack had a contract with at&t stating that sprint can be it's only competitor for the contract they signed...now all of a sudden radioshack carries t-mobile!?! this comes to the conclusion that t-mobile and sprint made some kind of deal to go through a loophole with the at&t contract with radioshack. also i was talking to my t-mobile representive about this and he told me that the father company of t-mobile..which is Deutsche Telekom made a bid to buy sprint. soo all this "rumor" stuff could have some truth to it. but again...something like this will not happen over night...just like when sprint bought over nextel. it took some time to do this...but as far as i know sprint is eventually going to do away with nextel...leaving perfect room for t-mobile :) lol

If radioshack had a deal like that with AT&T then they could NOT sell T-Mobile phones unless a deal was finalized which it is not b/c it would have to be made public for the shareholders and interested partners. So no radioshack does not have a deal like that, or they are not selling T-mobile.

I mentioned merger above as a possible theory BUT the big thing which you can find simply by typing into Google the Merger with sprint theory is that they are two different servers, ie CDMA and GSM. It would take a LOT and i mean A LOT to merge the two before they are using 4G and even then they have plans for two different 4G networks that are not compatible.

Not saying this cannot happen but there are huge things that have to be taken care of first and as of the last round of talks that were made public T-Mo and sprint were unsure of how to "quickly" integrate both networks.

Lastly they would NOT be second in the carrier world they would still be third. AT&T has 78.2m users and T-Mo and Sprint would have 78m combined. So still in third. DT only commented about buying Sprint b/c T-mo sales were down and if DT buys Sprint they will have the second largest provider in Europe. Sprint stocks also rose 11% the day talks were "suspected". Which means sprint is worth more and thus the price would have reflect that.

I think it goes without saying right now that speculation for “Project Dark” or “Project Black” as we believe its mistakenly been called around the web is quite high. With that said, either everyone thinks they already know what it, what it should be or most importantly, what they want it to be. The real question is what it would really take from T-mobile to pole vault over Sprint to the number three spot. Is the iPhone as a number of you have come to speculate really the answer? Is the iPhone even on the table or is AT&T retaining its kung-fu like grip on the Apple relationship? Regardless of your opinion on the idevice it’s undoubtedly the key to AT&T riches right now regardless of whatever network hell their customers are enduring. So here we have it, a mighty poll for “Project Dark,” as we have read your comments but now want to see where the majority falls with their hopes for whatever it turns out to be.

Angryspoon

AT&T might not have an option in the near future. As anyone in the accounting or even business world know when the SEC or FCC get their eyes fixed on you they tear you apart. Both have stated they think the whole Apple and AT&T deal is wrong and should not be allowed as it stifles competition. Verizon also has a deal that is being looked at. It will be interesting to see what is really going to happen both with the FCC and AT&T.

well, lets think about this

att had a 5-year contract w/ apple - when is that 5 years up??

i think there's more credibility to the t-mo/sprint merger idea - that's MUCH bigger than any single device a carrier has

problem with that theory though.. cdma/gsm

*shrug*

Angryspoon
10-09-2009, 01:15 AM
If the FCC scares or says otherwise they HAVE to give up the contract.

CDMA and GSM can merge. It just takes extra effort.

SDscorch
10-09-2009, 01:47 AM
i dont' think its that big of a deal to have GSM and CDMA - t-mo simply now gains a cdma network - you keep all those sprint employees doing what they were doing the day before you merged

keep all that infrastructure - consolidate where you can to cut duplication

and then sprint customers can buy phones that work overseas

and t-mo can finally get k!ck-a ss phones

heh!

Angryspoon
10-09-2009, 03:50 AM
Transferring from GSM to CDMA or to combine the two does take a lot of work. They use two different frequencies and use completely different setups. Its not a simply procedure but Sprint nor T-mobile has a great network but combined they would finally have a decent network. What would be the hard decision is would they retain GSM or CDMA? We mostly prefer GSM b/c the phones are way better.

All really depends on which company has the upper hand. Currently Sprint has more customers which would make them worth a little more especially since they also have the first 4G network. Of course Sprints stock increased 11% when T-Mo talked about buying them making them worth EVEN MORE! Its going to be interesting if this is the announcement. To bad Sprint did not have Verizon's network man would that be a big jump.

If only Verizon was more cool about things and had the cheaper plans then a good move would be the merger of those 2 but Verizon sucks on a lot of things.

Unless the announcement is they are going to fix the crappy coverage areas and actually put usable 3G outside of major markets there is little they can do to impress me.

Crappy coverage is t-mobiles issue.

Just found an update to the project black theory as to what it could be

http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2009/10/09/t-mobiles-rumored-project-black-handsets/

Boy Genius hears T-Mobile's Project Dark (aka Black) contains two things: a bunch of phones launch, like the Cliq and BlackBerry 9700, and more importantly, a "very, very rapid expansion" of T-Mobile 3G network—the 21Mbps HSPA one. Update:

There's actually more to it, possibly: A new "Everything Unlimited" plan that'll be $50 for all-you-can-eat voice, SMS, MMS and data. Watch out, Sprint. Plus, T-Mobile employees will be getting a snazzy new uniform consisting of a black shirt and grey pants. We'll see. [BGR]

I'm incredibly positive they're getting trained on the brand new OS Maemo 5 for their Nokia N900 that should be coming out. It's going to be the best phone on the market when it comes out... I'm super excited for it. Hell, there is already a SNES emulator for it and you can use it's TV out to play it on your TV; on top of that it already had the bluetooth profile for a Wiimote. So, you can play SNES on your TV with a Wiimote using your phone... How cool is that? I can't wait to see what else they get that thing to do.

It would be great if it was a huge combination deal such as:
Buying Sprint
Getting iPhone
$50 unlimited everything plan
Upgrading towers

It has to be huge for them to snag a couple million users and Apple has been seeing all the reports that iPhone sales are expected to double when the phone is offered on other networks other than AT&T. I would totally get one for my wife as she is not a fan of Android phones.

it would be interesting to see what will happen if T-Mo buys Sprint considering one is CDMA and one is GSM. Hopefully they do buy them and we get more coverage. I think the best thing though would be for T-Mo to get access to Verizon / Alltel towers. Man could you image that big of a network all of a sudden. Now that would be game changer since Verizon phones suck.

i just got some info from t-mo and they told me that project black was a project that t-mo is working on to have a faster 3g and in more places.

dats what they told me and also what do u guys think? is this enough to boost tmobile to atleast 2nd infront of atnt?

if not what do u think t-mo should do for customers to be in second (and be realistic n not post nonsence.)yes second cause we all know verizon has better coverage than any one.

With all the information pertaining to Project Dark that is leaking, lingering questions remain. We are still days away from the official T-Mobile announcement, but one of our great readers was kind enough to ensure some key points still come across. If more questions are out there, pass them along and I’ll see what I can do about getting them answered.

-Even More:
Contract
Discounted Handset Upfront

Even More Plus:
No Contract
Lowest Rates
No discount on handset
Retail Price of phone may be paid in 20 installments

-With the Even More Plus (no contract) there is no subsidized price on the phone, but customers will be offered to purchase the phone at retail price and pay for it in 20 installments, and yes, Equipment credit lines will be very high and reasonable for Even More Plus customers.

-After October 25th when these plans launch, all existing plans will become grandfathered are no longer available. Yes, MyFaves is gone. All customers with the grandfathered contracted plans will be able to switch to an Even More plan (contract) without an extension of their existing contract or an extra fee.

-The times where an extra fee is incurred include:
Switching from Even More to Even More plus will require paying a $200 termination fee, so us reps have been told repeatedly to make sure we help customers pick the right plan for them before activating.
Switching from a grandfathered plan to Even More Plus will require a $35 fee per line. On Family plans there is no fee for lines 3-5, so the most you’d have to pay is $70. Once on the Even More Plus, you must still carry out the rest of your contract, but you will never be able to switch to Even More and will never again get a subsidized price on a phone. The reason why someone might want to do this in the first place is because the Even More Plus plans are going to be slightly cheaper than Even More.

-There is no way to switch from Even More Plus to Even More without canceling all together and getting a new phone number

Project Black is causing T-Mobile to get more business from me today: The new plans are so much worse than my existing Family Loyalty Unlimited plan that I am adding a couple of lines that I will need in the near future to lock in my old rates for the future. It's not clear that the Loyalty plans will go away, but it seems they might. I don't want to take the chance of needing to pay an extra ~$80.00/month (my best guess of the total for 4 lines) with the new plans.

I'm getting the same deal I've been planning on, it's just that I'll be paying for it a few months extra since I'm getting it earlier...

No way is this new marketing plan going to propel T-Mobile into the #2 position. They've just raised their minimum entry point to the same level as every other carrier while they continue to have the worst 3G network.

new plans look good to me, i get 750 min + unlimited txt on my family plan for $90, so the new plans basically add data in for me for free. but unlike everyone else, it seems, i've only been with tmo since the beginning of the year. the cost would be way more if we were actually paying the $35 per phone to get unlimited data and txting on our G1s, it would come out to like $140 i think. i'm pretty sure they are trying to grow their customer base, so they don't care about the old customers, it's the new ones they are trying to get signed up.

That would be a terrible business model. If they don't keep the current customers happy, getting new customers won't help their business since it would only REPLACE the current base, rather than ADD to it.

It's the truth though. Cell companies always tend to have better options for first time signups.

Hmm you can get a AAA discount with Tmobile? I'll have to look into that!

I can confirm the 13% for AAA membership. Just called and it saves me over $20/mo.

So now I have grandfathered in:
2 unlimited Loyalty Family Plan lines...........................................$9 0
3rd unlimited line added............................................. ....................$40
1 unlimted data + 400 text (plenty).......................................... ......$25
Total............................................. .................................................. ..$155/mo
Already the cheapest anywhere, now less AAA discount.......-$20
Final total (less taxes and fees of course).................................$135/mo

That's a VERY good deal for 3 unlimited lines and 1 3G phone. No other carrier can touch it, including T-Mo's Project Dark Even More + no-contract plans. And I can still get subsidized phones if I re-up fo r2 years (though I probably won't, going to unlocked generic phones).

PLUS...the N900 I have on pre-order plays nice with T-Mo's 3G.

Been happily with T-Mo for 12 years. Looks like I'll be with them a few more. Thank goodness for grandfathered plans...

Crashdamage, let us know when you get your N900 and what you think about it. I was looking into that too but I'm just not sure about leaving Android os, it has really grown on me and Android is growing and changing so fast I don't want to miss anything, LOL.

I would love it if you gave us what you like about the N900, what you don't and how it compares to Android from your perspective.

I might just get one too!

Thanks

You can get 10% off with Freelancersunion, and membership is free. I signed up and got the discount after I had already paid for and activated my phone at the retail store. Since they offered free activation, TMo was kind enough to deduct the $35 even though the dealer had also waived the fee. Bottom line is I paid about $35 for my G1.

I think its only two of us in the n900 bandwagon, CrashDamage? So since I won't be on contract with the new plan I will pay 80$ monthly for unlimited everything, correct?

I'm eyeballing the N900 also, after what Google pulled with cyanogen. Bratag is there as well.

Who knows how many here will make the move? Might be an interesting poll. If rumors mean anything, the N900 is selling very well on pre-order, better than Nokia anticipated even with little promotion from them. On T-MoNews there's a 'Your next phone' poll and the N900 is 3rd behind the HTC HD2 and 'Wait for something better'.

I know I'm really glad I didn't wait for the disappointing Moto Sholes (or Droid or whatever it's called today). Not as powerful as I hoped, little on-board storage and just friggin' butt-ugly.

Been happily with T-Mo for 12 years. Looks like I'll be with them a few more. Thank goodness for grandfathered plans...I have basically the same plan as you, with one of the three lines having the original G1 US$25 plan for data and 400 text messages. However, the other two lines have the MT3G plan at US$25 without text messages.

I had thought that the AAA discount did NOT apply to the Loyalty Family Plan until I read your post. So I called T-Mobile to find out. The rep told me it did not. To make a long story short, I eventually got to someone who agreed to make the change and confirmed the change while I was on the phone. She said it takes 30 to 45 days to become active. We'll see if it actually goes through.

Can you confirm that you are actually receiving the AAA discount on your bill today? TIA!

I'm getting the same deal I've been planning on, it's just that I'll be paying for it a few months extra since I'm getting it earlier...Just an update on this: I went to my.t-mobile.com this morning now that the new rates are in place and tried to Add-a-Line to my plan to see if it would let me add a new line to my grandfathered plan without making me change to a different plan. It still allows it, so my concern that I would not be able to add the line after the changeover was ill-founded. As it turns out, I only added one of the two lines I was considering, as this new line is needed in the near future anyway. I held off on the other one. Now I'm glad I did, since I can still make that change at some time in the future. Anyway, FYI.

Did anybody get this or is everyone happy with their grandfathered/AAA or whatever discount you get. We might need a poll now.

My grandfathered plan is better, I get myfaves for free and get a 10% discount from the free lancers union. But start a poll and see what everbody else thinks.

It works out pretty close for me. Right now, it's little cheaper ($10/mo) to stay with a grandfathered Unlimited Family Loyalty plan with one added line and data + 400 text added to my line. IOW, I have 3 unlimited lines, but no text or data on 2 of those.

If later I need to add data on a second line, then it'll be a little cheaper ($20/mo) to go to the Unlimited Family Even More + plan with a added line. I'll give up the possibility of a subsidized phone, but really don't care.
