I have CyanogenMod-4.0.4. I am thinking about modding my G1 to the latest version.

What things should i look out for? I am always cautious. Is there any problems with this ROM?

I have mine tethered, apps2sd, will flashing from 4.0.4 to v4.1.999 break my apps2SD?

Will I need to flash my radio first? And to get all the audio back (ringtons, etc.. ) I know i have to just unzip the audio resources. But I heard there was some issues with the ROM due to the legal problems with not being able to include all the files due to the redistribution laws. Is it a PAI?

i think you need to read my thread on cyan 4.1.999 . read the first post in that thread very carefully . and btw , everything could go perfectly flashing 4.1.999 , very easy . or it might have issues . for that we are here to help :)

I went from v4.04 to 4.1.999

Good Tutorial: http://www.simplehelp.net/2009/10/04/how-to-install-cyanogenmod-4-1-99-on-your-g1-android-phone/

just substitute 4.1.99 with 4.1.999

expect another 9 soonish, i'd wait for 4.1.9999 if i were you, there are still a few issues and if you're not happy on an experimental rom i'd avoid it untill it's a stable 4.2

Friends in from out of town, more nines later

I upgraded last week and the ROM runs fine. Make sure you upgrade your ext2 partition to a ext4 if it already isnt a ext4. Apps2sd still works fine. Use the simplehelp tutorial aryndar posted.

Go ahead and try it. It is extremely stable and has few to no issues as long as you WIPE before installing. Follow the instructions via Cyanogen and you will be fine. Just be sure to do a nandroid and then a wipe as his instructions tell you.

Do you have a ext2 partition? That's probably why, you need to upgrde it to ext4 and after that it will be super fast

how do i do that? you think that could be the main error? cause it's lagging so bad &i'm trying to find threads of people having the same error but i don't seem to find any. I went from JFv1.5ADP to CM 4.0.4 without a wipe cause ppl said it wasn't necessary but i've been getting a lot of force close errors &i think i partitioned my SD card correct.

i just got a text message &it lagged up my whole home screen, it took like 2 min for it to like sort of return to viewing screen, then i got a handcentsms force close error &then it went black for a while like it looked like the screen was trying to load but was taking forever then all of a sudden it just rebooted.

Not entirely true. I have ext3 and it's running perfect. The key points are to wipe before you flash. Amon Ras' Recovery is perfect for making the change over. You can use it to partition your SD, then while still in recovery, use it to update to ext3. Simms has a good tut on how to make the conversion along with Cyanogens instructions on XDA.

Odds are, if your running that laggy, you either didnt wipe before you flashed, or your ext* partition is cluttered. JMO.

HMPH so would that mean i would need to go into recovery &just go back to my latest back up on nandroid or could i just fix a cluttered partition. Cause i followed instructions, wiped then i did the dream_devphone_userdebug-ota-14721.zip first reboot, then i did the 4.1.999 &waited for it to reboot again. but it's soo ridiculously lagging that i just dont even know what to do. i've been at this all day well more like since 12pm.

if you have the recovery i mentioned, you can try fixing your ext partition. As much as a PIA it is, sometimes just doing a fresh wipe of everything and starting from scratch helps allot. Just run a nandroid and root backup before hand. Copy everything off your SD card onto your comp and then wipe everything clean. Case in point, I just sat here and reparted/formated my entire SD, reflashed everything from scratch, reinstalled all my apps ect and I've gotten a huge increase in performance. Granted, I did it because I was bored, your case may be that it's needed. Once again...JMO.

P.S. I nandroided, backed up, formated, reflashed ect all within 30 mins. If your new to it all, it shouldnt take more then an hour tops.

Amon_Ra recovery is an awesome tool for that, however it will only update your ext partition to ext3 currently. Unless your running a Hero based ROM, ext3 is sufficiant.

I am also having a problem locating nandroid. I have been searching in the apps location and even searched for it. I did find an apk file. Can anyone link me to the DL for it? I want to try this upgrade today while at work. Also I heard about the lag problems with anything other than ext4. Will there be lag with ext3? And is Amon_ra in the market?

none of this is in the market . this is a hack(amon ras recovery) . nandroid is located in the recovery . your phone has to be rooted for you to do this . are you rooted ? theres no lag with ext2 or ext3 .

You really REALLY need to go here and read. The best thing you can do is really read this until you understand exactly what you are doing. The worst thing you can do for yourself is simply root with no knowledge about what exactly you are doing. this is a link to CM and everything you need to know about it.

CM 4.1.999 is blazing fast with NO LAG at all. So if you do it you will not be disappointed as its amazing.

Thank you both, This is just want i needed. I happen to use Centos 5.3 as my workstation and i have a really solid knowledge of both linux and unix. (freeBSD-netBSD) but the phone is new terrotory for me. I do feel more confident tho when I SU and see my file system. But there are very few commands in the shell we are given. Even echo $SHELL doesnt provide anything. I know its /bin/sh.

But thank you for the posted details.

Oh wait, am I to assume tht back up code, nandroid is in that recovery image. Thanks for the details guys. I will post my progress. I spent almost 2 months without my phone, I had to replace the sccreen, the keyboard, and gps board. And waiting on parts from international sucked. So Now im getting pretty used to repairing them. Just the fact that i didnt have extra parts left over is a blessing.

Thanks again,
Shane.
