read my thread on amon ras recovery image ! you can do it manually through the terminal in recovery using cyanogens recovery , or do it through the push of one button in amon ras recovery , very easy :)
heres the thread....

this one is specifically made for the dream , or g1 . the others before 1.2.2 were not . you will be fine with this one , ive been using it . and , believe me , i had a hard time leaving cyanogens !

i was staying away from amon ras recovery for a long time , didnt trust it . amon ra cleared up many questions for me , AND is always happy to listen to ideas for improvement . when he released the recovery for the g1 specifically , i jumped all over it and havent looked back since :)

What do you mean messing up your sd ? When you partition the sd cardf , it clears everything off of it .

RA 1.2.3 does a linux swap. Just chose alt + 1 from the recovery console.

he says that he has problems when he uses amon ras recovery . his mac can read the sd after , but cant write to it ??????????
i dont think that that would be a recovery issue , probably a mac issue ????

Yeah, think your right. May have to go with sd parted through cyan 1.4 recovery.

Another option might be to use a live cd of ubunto, that's what I used the first time.

+1 to this.
mint linux (http://www.linuxmint.com/download.php) is a great distro, ubuntu-based. i think it's the easiest way to partition.
