Hello guys,

(once again) I created a new application called AndRemote, which will be publicly available soon.

AndRemote is a highly flexible Remote Control for our beloved Android platform, which enables you to control any application right from your Android device.
Detailed information here: http://andremote.anddev.org/

you can download the AndRemote-Beta here:

http://andremote.anddev.org/download.php?uid=4

Note: You will need the server-tool on your desktop-pc too:

http://andremote.anddev.org/download.php?uid=1

This video show the basic instructions on how to use AndRemote:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T_G0nDUleU8

The interesting thing is that anyone can build new Layouts to be loaded into AndRemote and to be shared with other users. Example of building one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ij7jp_Jnszg

The idea is that the more users are creating + sharing their Layouts for every pc-application possible, the more the others can choose from.

Let me know what you think about my project.
Any ideas ?

PS: Find detailed information on how it works what you can contribute etc here: http://andremote.anddev.org/

Best Regards,
Nicolas

Hi Guys,

to show you how flexible AndRemote is, I put together this PluginLayout:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JMYg04vGs8c

http://andremote.anddev.org/pluginlayouts/files/images/1255947532_background.png

It enables you to send chat-messages in DotA (http://www.dota-allstars.com/) with just one tap to your Android device.
When you play DotA, you know that those messages are extremely important and every second you are not typing is worth gold and life. ;)

Maybe you know can see how creative one can be creating Layouts for AndRemote :)

Nicolas

Hi!
What is the meaning of a lock and a voice mail icon with a yellow star in the notification bar of "mytouch"? Called T-Mobile support and they couldn't give me an answer!!! Peace & thanks!

This app is very exciting. I just wish it would show up on the Market. Not available in Japan?

This sounds very exciting but I also cannot find it in the Market. Do we have to get it from your website?

Hi guys,

This app is very exciting. I just wish it would show up on the Market. Not available in Japan?

This sounds very exciting but I also cannot find it in the Market. Do we have to get it from your website?

Its not yet on the market. Its already working very good and very stable I'm just adding some more features (like keep screen awake) and more layouts.
I.e. Yesterday I added functionality (also for the Builder) to make 'Touchscreen-Areas'. Accelerometer controls to come soon.

Here is the current list with a new layout "Simple Mouse" using this new feature: http://andremote.anddev.org/pluginlayouts/pluginlayoutlist.php

I'll probably publish a first public version within a week.

Currently I am thinking about a business-model.
I think it will turn out to this:

The Server and Layout-Builder are free (of course)
The Client (downloadable from the Market and SlideMe) will be $0,99
There will be several layouts (the current ones + about 10 more) made by me
There will be very very much layouts free and paid from other developers, distributed through the "built-in" Downloader and the Android Market

It would be great if you'd let me know what you think about this business-model.

Thanks in advance.

Nicolas

Well it sounds reasonable and it's great that there is a builder. I'm looking forward to tinkering with it. I've been using VLC Remote and pmix to control VLC and MPD respectively.

Hi guys,

I added another one, the "Windows Media Player Remote" (See: http://andremote.anddev.org/pluginlayouts/pluginlayoutlist.php )

http://andremote.anddev.org/pluginlayouts/files/images/1255122765_background.png

Do you maybe have ideas for some more cool and useful layouts, which I could add for the soon upcoming launch? (Remember it can do anything you can do with your mouse and keyboard!)

Nicolas

I'd like to be able to control Openoffice.org presentations.

:D Great, I totally didn't think about that ...

Let me know what you think is important and what the hotkeys are that you would use when you'd do it manually on your PC, like:

Next Slide: "Arrow Right"
Previous Slide: "Arrow Left"
...

(I'll already do one for PowerPoint in the meantime.)

Couldn't resist and did another one: a D-Pad, useful for reading PDFs, Documents and Websites. (See: http://andremote.anddev.org/pluginlayouts/pluginlayoutlist.php )

It would be cool if an interface could be designed that would let us use these controls. Might be overkill for some but...

Esc
End presentation.

Spacebar or Right arrow or Down arrow or Page Down or Enter or Return or N
Play next effect (if any, else go to next slide).

Alt+Page Down
Go to next slide without playing effects.

[number] + Enter
Go to slide [number].

Left arrow or Up arrow or Page Up or Backspace or P
Play previous effect again or show previous slide.

Alt+Page Up
Go to the previous slide without playing effects.

Home
Jump to first slide in the slide show.

End
Jump to the last slide in the slide show.

Ctrl+Page Up
Go to the previous slide.

Ctrl+Page Down
Go to the next slide.

B or .
Show black screen until next key or mouse wheel event.

W or ,
Show white screen until next key or mouse wheel event.

Great. Maybe we can reduce it a little...

What is difference between:
- "Go to next slide without playing effects."
and
- Go to the next slide.

I mean ... we can put this together imo.
Because 12 buttons do not add up to simplicity.
I think I'll add a simple one with ~4-8 of the above options and its up to the community to create an advanced version providing all buttons mentioned, but looking a bit full.

Nicolas

I'm with you there. If you can find a balance between functional and simple, that would be great.

I downloaded the layout builder and started putting something together. I was wondering what I need to consider when choosing a background. The size etc. I'm guessing that it's beyond the scope of this app to get information back from whatever it is controlling.

I'm enjoying this!

plusminus
11-01-2009, 08:59 AM
What you need to consider most is the screen-orientation. Second is the width-height relation.

If you have a 480(width)x320(height) background for landscape, it will look perfect for 320x240 screens and 640x480 screens. On i.e. the 'Droid' with a 850x480 screen it would be stretched by its width, while being fully functional.
(I could not test this, but this is what it should be doing when looking my code =D )

As you may have noticed so far, you cannot yet load back a created layout to modify it with the Builder later on.(You have to start from a blank one now) But I'm working on this.

Nicolas

I want to thank 'Chokkan' for the first user-contributed layout: 'Sonata Remote'(Control playback of Sonata music player.)

I updated the "Downoad Layouts"-List of the Client to be sortable, it also has indicators which layouts are already installed and which have updates ready for you.

Next version (very soon) offers Layout-Developers an option to have 'smooth' MouseMovement-Commands and 'smooth' MouseAreas.
'smooth' means that the cursor will be interpolated, as before the amount of MotionEvents produced by Android did not scale well to the bigger pc-screen.

Also improved detection of disconnects.

Awesome to see your layout in action  :)

You know you could have linked that video to the layout when you uploaded it?
For now I manually added the Youtube-Link to the database.

The good thing if you linked it, the useres will be able to watch the video before downloading the layout and testing it themselves. Also it proves that it worked :D

Thanks for that, I'll remember next time.

I was thinking of going ahead and making a layout for Openoffice Impress. Is that OK, or are you going to do one?

Please forgive my ignorance on this, but can someone please explain the benefit of these remotes? If I have to have my device plugged in to my computer via USB why wouldn't I just use the mouse/keyboard?

I'm sure there is an explanation that will make me into the idiot of the day, but let me know. Thanks.

Hi,

If I have to have my device plugged in to my computer via USB why wouldn't I just use the mouse/keyboard?
It works over WiFi (Or 2G/3G) not over USB.
I had the USB plugged for developing purpose.

USB-connection is not required.
Sorry for the inconvenience. :o

Thank you for the explanation. Can you give me a real world benefit of this technology? Off the top of my head I'm thinking this would be a cool way to control my computer when I have it plugged in to my LCD TV. I'm sure there are more interesting and productive uses. Thanks again.

Hi,

Can you give me a real world benefit of this technology?

I quite often watch Movies on my PC, while lying on my couch. I think you also exprienced your monitor fading black (or screensaver) when not touching your mouse for X minutes.

THere is a layout called "Mouse Shaker" which allows me to simply touch the screen to simulate a mouse-movement to bring the monitor back to life.

Best Regars,
Nicolas
