View Full Version : Is Tmobile coming out with anything to meet or beat DROID?

I like the Droid so far (although I must admit I hate that it doesnt have dedicated number keys on its "qwerty-lite")
but I'm not sure I like it enought to break a contract and jump over to Verizon just yet.
I'm wondering what T-Mobile has coming down the pipe.. any rumblings out there?
Perhaps something to compete with "Droid" but running a newer faster processor?
Can anybody fill me in? I need to decide whether or not to jump ship..
To my knowledge, the next Android in the pipeline is the 15700 which for all intensive purposes is just the Galaxy with smaller internal memory and screen resolution.

right, the Dragon that's the one i heard about- with a new processor, right?
any more info on that one?
I'm kinda hoping for something nice from Motorola, as I'm not a big fan of HTC after the G1- i didnt care for the looseness and crappy keys

I know this might not be Android, but Nokia N900. It looks pretty promising. I will be getting one of these and one of the Snapdragon Android phones.

I was going to suggest this as well. N900 is looking like a beast of a phone. Full Linux instead of watered down Linux, awesome.

Do any of these phone LOOK appealing, the specs mostly are but the actual phone? I like the calgary most.
Lastly I read today in a magezine that HTC is gonne bring it's Sense UI to the MT3G/Magic. [also said the problems with that and hardware, ram, memory etc]
And It made me think, well, the holiday MT3G Fender has a 3.5mm head jack.
Think they might just release a whole new Magic?

i actually like the look of the sprint hero, the liquid and the x3
and if the pic that simms provided is the rumored dragon then i like it too
wow none of my picks have real keyboards :( but hopefully the faster processors and maybe multitouch can make the vk useable like the iphones vk

For me, nothing will beat a QWERTY keyboard. I'll never buy a phone w/o one.
I'll check out the droid when it comes out and see if its worth a switch. There's alot coming up soon, with these new everything plans, etc.
I'm itching to get a faster Android phone, but i wouldnt be suprised if I have to wait for TMobile to come out with something to rival droid.

There is very little known about that phone, other than the fact that its a Android phone, and it has the snapdragon 1ghz processor. Only thing TMo has confirmed is the Behold 2, and another version of the mytouch
The N900 is pretty much your only sure bet for a high end phone on T-Mobie

I'm also wanting a faster phone than my G1, but must have a physical keyboard. I like T-Mobile's prices and customer service, but I find that their 3G service is thin in areas and I find myself running into Edge frequently, which has been problematic for me, since I use my phone for business.
So I am going to have to seriously give the Droid phone a look, since VZW's 3G coverage is said to be so comprehensive. What concerns me is how much more expensive the monthly total for service will be with Verizon than it has been with T-Mobile.

The Droid/Motorola Sholes looks AMAZING. Thinner than an iPhone 3GS and a physical keyboard!?! My mind is blown.
T-Mo has been good to me and my 3G coverage is great. I really wants T-Mo to bring this phone to its network!
The thing that scares me about the "Droid" is the fact that it is on Verizon. Verizon has a reputation of neutering its devices...

Yes indeed they do ... and that is one of many items on my "checklist to consider before I buy a Droid phone that I will be watching very very closely. If they are gimping the phone, or harassing folks who are rooting it, hassling folks who tether the phone occasionally, etc., then the Droid is removed from consideration for me.

Its possible that T-Mobile USA will get the Droid. There is a GSM version headed to Europe, they will have to modify the GSM bands to support US 3G though. Here's the FCC papers https://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/prod/oet/forms/blobs/retrieve.cgi?attachment_id=1183598&native_or_pdf=pdf

That would be Sweet if T-Mobile gets Droid!!
I'm sorry but I'm not jumping ship for any other carrier!
I've been with all the major carriers besides AT&T and I know they suck so I'm staying put.
T-Mobile is dropping their new rate plans soon and they are expanding their network pretty fast as of late.
I will wait for their Monster device and I can bet it will be here around BLACK FRIDAY!!

T-Mobile ... is expanding their network pretty fast as of late.
Are you referring to their 3G network? And if so, do you have a link with some detailed info on that? Are they just expanding into new areas, or are they expanding the 3G coverage in areas that they already cover, but thinly?
I would be very interested, because T-Mo's somewhat thin 3G coverage has become a real issue for me.

No concrete details but sites like TMONEWS.com etc.. believe it's what T-mobile has instore as part of their Project Black/Dark
They are also planning on rolling out their 21Mbps HSPA+ network. (Which they tested in Philly recently)

I think I've decided to stick with TMob at least until all this project Dark stuff is out.
I like the fact that they were the ANDROID ORIGINATORS and despite having some issues with HTC's quality, I've been quite pleased with my Tmob/Android experience.
Their prices are good, the 3G coverage needs work, but it will get there.
I am going to have some faith in them that they realize they need a direct DROID competitor.
I would expect to see something kickass and snapdragon based within the next 4 months or so.
..hopefully with a nice hard/clicky full QWERTY and not built by HTC (sharp or motorola are my prefs)
I don't think vzw will be trying to "cripple" this Droid coming out. They are taking leaps and bounds as of late to rectify that issue. Mainly w the Storm 2 having wifi. That's huge for vzw! I think vzw is finally coming around...hopefully. I'll be probably getting the Droid on launch so I'll post my findings. Here's to hoping.

i think even if they cripple the phone its nothing that rooting wont fix
then again who knows how easy/hard it would be to root
Is rooting the same as jailbreaking?

I am due for an upgrade, full discount on Nov 17th. I despise my TMo Dash - mostly the Windows Mobile. I am desperate for a good Android phone but I don't know if TMo has any reason to keep me, especially with the Droid on VZW. All the TMo dark/black I hear is just rumor and their network and hardware is presently a generation old (comapred to the Droid). I am afraid if I get a Cliq or a MyTouch and renew for 2 years I will have a new phone that is already outdated PLUS stuck w/ my regular contract and not able to take advantage of Dark/Black. I think VZW is the place for me but I have been w/ TMo for almost 10 years! Oh, what to do?!

you're a valuable customer w/ 10 years, and that should matter to them. ask to speak to a higher level customer service rep, get them to relay your issue up the chain, and tell them they're gonna lose you if they can't keep up.

I have the Samsung Omnia right now and my contract is up again for Verizon so I think I'm going to go with the Droid. My Omnia has been treating me very well but I do miss the physical QWERTY keyboard from previous phones.
I don't really notice Verizon crippling my omnia. The only thing I am not really a fan of is windows mobile but with SPB mobile shell it is not really an issue. I have wifi, tons of apps and games, divx capability, 8 gb internal and 8 gb sd card, and a nice 5 mega pixel camera with flash. They also just unlocked gps on it so I can use google maps while I drive or need directions. The only problem I have with it is like I said windows mobile and I would love to have multi-touch ability.
I am switching to Droid just for Android because I think it has a much better future than windows mobile. Full physical QWERTY will be awesome as well.
Verizon seems to be headed in a different direction. They've stopped forcing their proprietary GPS software down your throat on their latest smartphones. and the price for their phones seems to have come down some as well. The Tour, TP2, and the wifi enabled Ozone are cheaper on Verizon than comparable devices from other carriers

The Dell phone with Android looks promising. Hopefully it will support T-mobile bands. I know it not considered a "phone" with his massive 4.8 screen. I think were at the point where we are thinking more of mobile computing with telephony features, instead of telephone with extra features. I can't what the next 5 years we shall see..

Again I have to plug this phone, look at the N900. No, it's not Android but, it is full Linux and built with amazing hardware that won't be obsolete in the next 4 months like any other Tmo phone. It isn't out for Tmo yet but, it's coming. As far as I can tell, even from that list of Android phones, it will be the best upcoming phone for Tmo.

So...I'm still under contract with T-Mobile, but I'm still considering getting out of it and switching to Verizon for the Droid. I really want this phone. What I want more is for the same phone to come to T-Mobile, or something better...since I've been with them for over 8 years. I am in the same situation, I am looking for an upgrade to the G1, but I want a physical keyboard as well. Hopefully T-mobile will have something new coming soon. Lets not forget the rumors that Google is creating their own phone which could be interesting. I also would like to see phones with at least 1gb of internal storage as well. No reason they can't up the storage to give us more space for apps, since no apps to sd cards. For me also I would like to stay with the stock Google UI, no HTC sense or Moto Blur or anything like that.

ORRRRRR htc dragon! dragon is winning, if it has a 3.5 millimeter jack, and if its for tmobile.
I would recommend sticking with Android :D I plan to switch to Android and I am highly impressed by the open platform and the awesome community surrounding Android (as far as themes, ROMs and apps go).
I have used BlackBerries (7100t, Pearl 8120, Curve 8320, limited use on 8900) on TMobile and they are nothing to brag about. I am not going to lie, RIM does make solid devices and their hardware is awesome. They quality of BlackBerry devices is solid and their designs are always appealing and slick, in my opinion.
The thing that is lacking most with BlackBerry is their OS and especially their browser, which I am sure you can agree is a big deal... especially with all of the rich web content these days. The Android and iPhone browser both blow the BlackBerry browser out of the water, even the latest browsers in BBOS 5 suck :(
Yes, TMobile has some dirty looking BlackBerry devices headed their way (the 8700)... but HTC always makes some damn sexy hardware. I would definitely take an HTC Dragon over a BlackBerry any day (God, help HTC realize their proprietary headphone connectors are garbage! :o)
I guess the whole point of this rant is to emphasize that the Android market seems like it is ready to explode with a bunch of awesome device offerings in the next 3-9 months. I would definitely stick with Android and find a device that works for you. With all of the growth will come more and more apps and a great, growing community :D

I've been out of contract with T-Mobile since May 2008, I just keep paying monthly.
And I have to second what pilar said about the Cliq, I don't know where the hate is coming from, but I spent about a solid 20 minutes playing with it, it seems a decent phone, much more responsive than the G1. Solid feel, iffy keyboard, but what the hell, I use the VK mainly. Its not the next big thing, but it is a step up from what we have now. But I am looking at going back to the evil that is Verizon for the Droid, my soul is up for sale pretty cheap it seems.

Patience is key folks...Granted the Motorola DROID LOOKS promising but I have my doubts. Simply because its running on one of the BEST OS's out there doesnt mean that the hardware will live up to the software's potential. I dont know about you guys but when it comes to phones, Motorola is on my poopie list!
However I will give credit where its due...the Motoral CLIQ is ok...for yougner generations of course.
PROS:
-5 home screens
-Inter-changable megapixel camera w/ orientation
CONS:
- Cant sync your Google info i.e like G1 when you first bought the phone you have to use TWO seperate sign ins ONE for motorala and ONE for Google(that is irritating)
- Its HEAVY as a brick, if you value this phone YOU WILL BUY A CASE FOR IT!!
- keyboard, for femine hands YES! chubby fingers STAY AWAY!
- I would put battery life but, of course if your running all those social app's CONSTANTLY then yeah what do you expect.
Other than that...I'd just wait for TMobile to "Unleash The Dragon"...Sisco style!!!
Oh and i forgot to mention, for the Motorola DROID, if you looveeee DL'ing Apps...this phone IS NOT FOR YOU! Guess what? The Droid has a 512 MB ROM which leaves 256 MB for app storage...not so great especially if your running Eclair =(
