Alrighty folks, I am about to make the big leap. I have read through several tutorials on rooting and it seems pretty straightforward. I have the SD card I am currently using in my unrooted G1 and I have another that I plan on using to root my G1.
I do have one question however, and I apologize if it is very noobish or if it has been answered countless times! After I have rooted and upgraded, can I just pop my old SD card in?

yea if its jus a modded rom like cyan's , with a hero rom u will NEED a partition for ext 2 (apps 2 sd) and linux swap
but if ur tryin to run apps to sd u will hve to partition ur sd card for apps to sd so realy u should back up ur old sd card , partition the new one , then jus load up everythin on to the fat32 partition of the new one
question for you is WUT ARE U TRYIN TO KEEP THE OLD SD FOR ?

Thanks much for your quick reply. :-) I will indeed want to run apps2SD.
I am mainly trying to keep the old SD as that is where I backed up all my current apps and settings etc. I see your way makes more sense. lol Thanks again for your help!

Simms22, I have run into a problem right off the bat. I followed your link and downloaded the files necessary. My error comes while flashing the dreaimg.nbh file. The progress bar fills up and then a few seconds after that it gives me a DREAIMG.nbh - FAIL up above and a update terminated update fail down below.
Any ideas?

Fantastic! Everything went smoothly and it appears I am rooted and running CM 4.2.3. I am going to install the hard spl and format my sd card so i can run apps2sd. I will find your posts on the recovery to make that easier as well.
Now, I see there is a CM 4.2.3.1. To flash this, all I need to do is boot into recovery, wipe, and then flash this version?

Ok guys, it appears I need help due to some stupidity on my part. Of course it was on the section that might brick my phone lol. I had the hard SPL installed and it said to check and make sure. So I did by booting into recovery and checking if the 3 androids on skateboards was on the bottom.
I went to reboot by pressing Call, Menu and End at the same time, but I either did it late, or wrong or something as it started flashing the DREAIMG.nbh file again. I didn't want to yank the battery or anything so I let it finish and restarted the rooting process.
Apparently that was bad. I got everything installed again, then when I went to reboot after installing the CM 4.2.3, it gives me the android screen and then just a black screen and it hangs there. Am I screwed, or can I recover from this? I can boot in recovery mode so I am hoping a fix can be suggested. All help is appreciated of course.

Indeed I am! I feel very silly though. I tried what you suggested and no go. I realized I was in a hurry and had forgotten to wipe before installing 1.6. Did it correctly this time and all is well. Thanks again so much for your help and patience!

Hey, good job on rooting! I think I've decided to root, but I'm still reading around and familiarizing myself with the whole process. I have a quick question though; does it matter the type of sd card I have? I bought my G1 used, and I'm pretty sure I have a basic 1 gb sd card in there. I know I need the FAT32 partition on it, so would the 1 gb be too small, or am i in good shape? Thanks.

if ur just looking to root and install cyanogen mod ,then that card would do and would run apps to sd ok, but for the future i would suggest getting a class 6 card ,its not the size that matters its how fast it goes , so i would suggest eventualy lookin to get a micro sdhc class 6 card

I'm not really a huge app user, so app2sd isn't a huge deal for me (but who knows what might happen if/when i get root). I'm not sure if I'd be using cyanogen or a hero rom yet.. I'm still researching and whatnot.

Simm22 you wrote a very good guide i followed you guide and it worked like a dream. I was on hakuro before but i haven't touched my g1 since i got my iphone 3gs. Recently got bored with my 3gs so decide to play around with the g1 again. I went back from hakuro to 1.0 rc7 then followed your guide to update to the firmware that you guys are on these days.
thanks

when i get to the point where i need to flash 1.6 and install ROM, it's not working. In recovery mode, i press Alt-l and it says:
Android system recovery utility
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command
Then the usual Home+Back, Alt+L, Alt+S, and Alt+W
