Question on switching icons for apps?

Ok I have never modded or rooted a phone before, but can follow directions pretty easily if you give me good ones. I have jpeg photos of the iphone icons and I would like to switch them to the existing app I have. For example if their was a way to look on to the phone for the icon that goes with chomp sms or messaging and just change the icon to the green square with the liitle bubble in it, like the one on the iPhone, and have that show up on the home screen instead of the stock one.
Don't tell me to go get an iPhone. I am on a sprint family contract and can't get one, but have grown to like the hero (my current phone.)
Android is OPEN SOURCE, and the whole hype is about how you can make the phone HOW YOU WANT IT, not how everyone else has theirs, but the second someone says something about turning their phone into an iPhone all these idiots start yelling BS about how the iPhone sucks. I like the iPhone's design and icons.
Can any one give directions to help me out?

You can use bettercut to change icons or if your phone is rooted you can upack and a rom and go into the res/drawable folder and replace the icons with .png's and resign the the rom and flash it back to your phone.
