This is not really an app idea in itself as it has already been done but i was wondering what you guys thought.
Basically i have a couple of shortcuts on my desktop which link directly to mobile sites (eurosport, train times (national rail uk)) etc etc so that when i click them they automatically open up browser and load the site in mobile guise.
However, i was browsing on getjar (use to use it when i had sony ericssons) and noticed that some clever clogs had loaded on a "flickr app" which has the logo for flickr, slots nicely into the applications toolbar etc but when clicked simply opens the flickr mobile site (as opposed to having the bookmark on your desktop).
I thought this was a really nice idea and was wondering if there was any way to implement it for other sights or bookmarks even if it involes the android SDK in some way?
Link to the afforementioned app here, hope you guys understand what i mean!

U mean u want it to be on the taskbar? Like toggle settings, or taskiller..? There's an app that sits on the taskbar and when u click it it'll show u like ur last 23 apps uve ran.. I saw this back when that jf multitouch video came out.. other then that. I think it'd be great if u could have any app u want on the taskbar

Yep exactly like that; so an "app" on the taskbar named "eurosport" or "flickr" or whatever, but when you open it, it just opens browser and takes you directly to the desired mobile site.
It can be done as in the link above but my tech knowledge is zero!
Anyone any ideas?

Hi dph1987,
I'm Johnpaul from GetJar. The Mobile Bookmark you speak of is called a Mobile Site Shortcut [Web App or MSS]. Any mobile site can be made into a shortcut on GetJar by entering in the WAP URL and uploading an icon that you the developer own [please do not use copywritten images].
To create your GetJar Mobile Site Shortcut, please log into your GetJar.com (http://getjar.com/) account and create a product page. By entering in your wap address we will auto create a Mobile Site Shortcut on your behalf which installs on Jave [J2ME], Android, Palm, Blackberry [RiM], FlashLite [Adobe], Windows Mobile & Symbian devices. If you have native applications put these apps into the same product page and the MSS will be served where-ever you do not have a native app! This shortcut [MSS] will install an icon onto the consumers device and when activated will open the device's browser, and direct the consumer straight to your wap site! To get the process started, please log onto your account at GetJar.com (http://getjar.com/) in the developers community.
Here is an example of how to get your MSS started with GetJar.com (http://getjar.com/); http://tinyurl.com/GetJarBuiscuitsInstructor.
Before proceeding to http://my.getjar.com/profile/register/?section=developer you will need to have:
* Your mobile site address [http://m.xxxXXXxxx.com (http://m.xxxxxxxxx.com/)] for us to Auto-Build your Mobile Site Shortcut aka MSS [http://tinyurl.com/GetJarBuiscuitsInstructor].
- GIF, JPG or PNG file. 320 height x 240 wide
- 20KB max file size
* Icon [to be viewed at m.getjar.com (http://m.getjar.com/), www.getjar.com (http://www.getjar.com/) & be used as the launch icon for MSS]
- GIF, JPG or PNG file. 64 height x 64 wide
- 7KB max file size
* Short Description [Appears on WAP and WEB sites, max. 140 chars, HTML not allowed]
* Long Description [Appears on WEB site only]
- Max. 8000 chars
- HTML allowed
- No JavaScript/Flash
- No HTML descriptions wider than 630px
- No HTML descriptions higher than 812px
We understand that your goal is to drive more traffic to your mobile site. To do this, the GetJar Mobile Site Shortcut turns your site into a downloadable app, for free. Instead of being just a link in an SMS message, or asking the user to bookmark the link himself, your site becomes a download icon on the phone menu, where people see it, and click. Mobile Site Shortcuts have been proven to be up to 8x more sticky than simple links.
Take a look at the following article for an outsiders point of view regarding the GetJar MSS. http://wapreview.com/blog/?tag=getjar
With a MSS you can drive tens or even hundreds of thousand users to your ".mobi", "m." or "wap." page immediately. Best thing is - it takes about 15 minutes to create the MSS and can go live in 24 hours not to mention it is cross platform compatible [Java, Symbian, Windows Mobile, Android & BlackBerry] and it looks great. Let me know what you think. To give you an idea, here is a link to a MSS that we created for YouTube which has received a whopping 1.5 million + downloads!

And of course a few more examples of companies that are using the GetJar Mobile Site Shortcut:
• YouTube http://www.getjar.com/products/16671/YouTube
• Facebook http://www.getjar.com/products/15801/FacebookMobile
• Windows Live http://www.getjar.com/products/19292/WindowsLive
• Google http://www.getjar.com/products/19231/Google
Beyond this, GetJar offers a way to promote your MSS that is 4x more cost effective than CPC ads: the GetJar Pay Per Download system (PPD).
With PPD, we do not charge for clicks to a landing page or even when the user pushes the "download" button. We only charge the download bid that you want to pay when the consumer "completes" the download action. So where CPC is just a click - PPD is an "ACTION." Therefore, structurally, every penny that you spend on PPD is 4x more effective than the same investment in CPC, because there are always some users who go to the landing page but who don't continue. Please see the attached presentation for a detailed analysis.
Finally, after you get momentum on GetJar, your Mobile Site Shortcut will get a lot of downloads for FREE. Our developers take advantage of this viral momentum, which lowers their cost of customer acquisition.
I've sourced out a few "MSS" tutorials for you and your team to use as an immediate solution to drive registrants to your site.
