Hows it going guys?

I am wanting to switch from my current rom build to cyanogen for a multitude of reasons, namely finding out Jesus Freke isn't developing any longer... but am unsure how much has to be done to do this....

I am wondering what build to go with, whether I need to change SPL, radio or recovery, and if neccessary, how to do this, as I haven't had do do any of the above before.

Also wondering if i need to wipe the phone to do this.

My main goals are just getting the phone updated to something better to work with, the phone running better and faster (I am seeing a lot of random issues and lots of random force closes), and something that has a lot of cool themes...

Also, I want something that is as stable as possible, I don't want to have to mess with my phone again for a while...

My phone's info...

Model Number: T-Mobile G1
Firmware Version: 1.5
Baseband Version: 60.50S.20.17H_2.22.19.26I
Kernel Version: 2.6.27-00392-g8312bag Jesusfreke@spork#2
Build Number: CRB43

Any help would be greatly appreciated..... Please go easy as I am not the most cell phone or computer literate......

Might be able to help you out. I recently went from JF 1.51 to 1.6 (dev) which subsequently un-rooted my phone. Not sure how, but it did. So I had to start from scratch and I found this by Cyan...
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Full_Update_Guide_-_G1/Dream_Firmware_to_CyanogenMod

So if you could baseline your phone, down grade and re-root, you might stand a chance. It's what I had to do, but everyone's situation is different. Hope it works out for ya!

I was in exactly your position yesterday. So I did some research and I successfully upgraded from JF 1.5 to cyanogen 4.2.3

I found that the documentation wasn't quite as good as I would have hoped, but there was really only one piece that I had a problem with.

As for whether or not you HAVE to wipe, i'm not sure. But what I read said to wipe, and clearing things out makes for a nice clean install. I recommend wiping.

Steps I took to upgrade:

Downloaded cm-recovery-1.4.img (from what I understand, this is like the bootloader)
http://cyanogenmod.com/download/recovery/cm-recovery-1.4.img

Downloaded update-cm-4.2.3-signed.zip (the new cyanogen rom)
http://www.cyanogenmod.com/download/rom/update-cm-4.2.3-signed.zip

Downloaded signed-dream_devphone_userdebug-ota-14721.zip (the official 1.6 rom wich has the necessary google apps)
http://developer.htc.com/adp.html#s3

use a tool such as HashCalc to verify that the files downloaded without corruption
http://download.cnet.com/HashCalc/3000-2250_4-10130770.html

Format your SD card (make sure it's NOT a "quick" format)

Copy the files to your SD card

Make sure your phone is fully charged before you start.

On your phone, run the terminal emulator. Elevate privilages by running:
su

(this makes following commands run as administrator)

The real magic is running:
flash_image recovery /sdcard/cm-recovery-1.4.img

(this actually flashes your new recovery firmware)

Now it is time to reboot the phone while holding the Home button.

This will bring you to the recovery firmware.

I highly recommend you first run the nandroid backup.

Then wipe the phone.

click "apply any .zip" and apply signed-dream_devphone_userdebug-ota-14721.zip

This is necessary because cyanogen's mod goes on top of the 1.6 firmware, which has the "google experience" apps.

DO NOT REBOOT YET

click "Apply any .zip" and apply the update-cm-4.2.3-signed.zip

when that is finished, reboot the phone using Home + Back.

Hopefully this all worked out for you.

How could you tell that your phone has been unrooted?

Anybody have any more specific information on the different builds and their requirements for what I'm specifically looking to do??

Great Success!

After Mbreezys suggestion, I installed Cyanogen 4.2.3 and absolutely love it.... Much faster than Jf 1.51 was, and runs much more stable now too... I installed the Pimp_blend blue theme, and it's very close to what I think my phone should look/run like

Incredibly fast...... I am truly blown away over how big a difference this has made....

Very easy to install too.... took me a minute to understand the technical jargon, but I did all in about half an hour, which for me is like lightning ninja fast...

Now they need to get the Prodigal Sun blue theme updated for 4.2.3 and I will be a very happy individual!

Thanks for all your help guys!

When you say run the nandroid backup, you just mean run a backup of the phone? I use MyBackup Pro. Hopefully that will work.

Also, can i run appstosd with this build? If so would it be possible to point to a link where to do it if it isn't different from the way you do it for JF builds. (edit)Another question for appstosd, can I add the ext2 partition before I start doing anything else? In other words, can I add the partition directly after I format the card? Since I already have the partition, do I need to do it again?

I've been scared out of my mind to upgrade to a newer version, but my phone is so slow now that I have to.
