After a quick study, I've discovered that AM/FM receiving on an HTC Magic is not possible, due to lack of hardware.

But, phones are essentially a radio, right?

Why can't we mod the frequencies? Or does the SDK not give us access to that information?

Uhh, I don't really know the details on hardware and frequencies but I'm pretty sure that can't be done.

Why not? It switches between 3G, 2G, CDMA, etc.

Surely it'd be able to do different frequencies

It's not just a frequency issue, it's a protocol issue. GSM, CDMA, etc. are totally different than FM. Your phone contains a GSM or CDMA radio, not a generic radio you can tune to any frequency.

Bugger.

I wasn't going to be tuning it to FM - was going to see if I could make it broadcast to a two way radio system (like on construction sites)
