People who used to own the g1 but now owns the new droid . How much better is the droid compare to the g1 ? Is it worth it to switch to a new phone company for the droid ? I love the g1 ( besides the sucky camera and the browser is kinda lame and sometimes my texts dont get sent ) but tmo sucks . So should i jump to the droid and cancel tmo ? Thanks

So I would expect you to have a stock G1, you should try Cyanogen Mod. The browser flies! Super fast everything else. And this is the real power of the G1 over almost any other android phone... it is the Android Developer Phone. All you have to do is wait a bit and some dev will make Eclair for G1 better than google could make it for the Droid.
On a technical side, the Droid has an excellent screen! Amazing resolution, but there hasn't been any other drastic improvements. I would still stick with the G1.

I had the G1 since launch day and got the Droid on launch. I like the Droid so much better. Beautiful screen that is bigger and higher resolution. Very fast. I can have lots of apps running and it is still just amazingly fast compared to G1. Installing an app from the market takes a fifth of the time during the "installing" phase. And of course it does have the latest greatest version of the Android OS.

I will be making the switch to the Droid and Verizon on Saturday. I've had a G1 with tmo since release (and been with tmo for 11 yrs on top of that).
I spent about 45 minutes in Verizon store a couple days ago comparing the Droid side by side with my G1 and the Droid outperforms it in everything it does. I have been waiting for months for a better piece of hardware running Android and I think the Droid is finally what I've been waiting for. I have gotten tired of slowness and home screen "lag" when exiting certain apps or the browser on my G1, there are times when I have wanted to chuck my G1 out the window it has gotten me so frustrated lol.
Anyways, it's largely personal opinion, I would suggest just going into a Verizon store and playing with a Droid. My local store had a live Droid connected to data network via 3G, I could test anything and everything. About the only thing I didn't like about the Droid was there was no physical talk or hangup button like on the G1. I'm sure I'll get used it though :D

I'm thinking of making a lil vid. I got the droid. G1. And eris in my hands. Must say the droid is faster. But the eris is not far behind verizons network is insane

I think the screen is better. That's all.
And I gave it SERIOUS thought. I couldn't wait to touch one and I expected to walk out the door with one. But when i got there...
The keyboard on the G1 is 100 times better. Trying to type on the droid I ALWAYS added a space and a / anytime I tried to type something. Somethign about the placement. I like that the G1 leaves space between the keys. I can type almost 30 wpm on the G1, but with the droid I'd bet I would use the virtual keyboard in landscape mode a much as the QWERTY.
as for speed, i didn't see it. I am running a rooted Cyanogen mod though, so maybe it is better than stock. My girlfriend's un-rooted gets laggy like that sometimes. but I find if you restart it once a day and keep your browser cache clean it runs pretty good.
But the Droid is DEFINITELY not faster than my current G1 configuration.
the camera is tons better. The video recording is much better. The screen is much better (being able to see the entire width of a web page is awesome)! The Google NAV was a selling point for me, but they made it available on my G1 within a few days, so that was not important anymore.
In the end it was like this for me...
the camera and the screen were BY FAR better than the G1.
Everything else for me was just as good on the G1. (I run apps2sd so a little extra internal memory for a while is fine).
you do get a 16Gb SD card with the Droid. That's cool.
Anyway, as I was saying, in the end...
There is NOTHING about the Droid that would make me want to pay $50 more a month for my phone bill. i will sit tight for 3 months and wait for a hyperdrive Android phone to hit T-Mobile.
It will. They'll compete. Every screen will get bigger. ever processor faster. T-Mobile won't lag for long. Cliq was a phone made for teenagers. They'll have an adult version soon.
Sorry, but I just switched from T Mobile to Verizon, and I've had the G1 and myTouch, now have the Droid.
Glad you convinced yourself that the G1 is as fast as the Droid, but it isn't even close!
I can download an app with the Droid, even a 3mb app, in about ten, twelve seconds! On the G1 or myTouch, I"d be waiting about 40-50 seconds or more.
That is probably due to the MUCH faster 3G on Verizon, in my area, at least (Los Angeles)
The phone blows away the previous two Androids I've owned! It is what Android SHOULD BE!
The Droid's internet connection simply shines! No more waiting... waiting... waiting... for the page to load! I now wait about 2-3 seconds, and that's IT!
Hey, I loved the G1, but if you haven't really tried the Droid or Droid Eris on Verizon, you should!
When I launch Task Manager, or Task Killer, it shows a LONG list of running apps, AND shows about 75-90mb of available memory! On the G1, it would show between 25-35mb of available memory.
Not interested in talking anyone into or out of getting a Droid, but... between what seems like a MUCH faster network, and a much faster processor in the Droid, this is NOT your father's android.....or last years Android.

I would love to see your video comparison!
Part of the increase in speed, I believe, is that Verizon's network does seem much faster to me then T Mobile's did, again, at least in my area (So. Cal)

1) As for speed I am assuming you were not comparing a Cyanogen MOD to the Droid. If you were running a Class6 SD card, Apps2Sd, Cyan MOD, they are very similiar.
2) I show 85mb free system memory. Not 25-35.
3) Ummm...I hate to pee on everyone's parade but the Droid processor and the G1 processor are the same speed. G1 is underclocked to 30, but it is a 500 processor, as is the droid.
4) all of the downloading and browser stuff you are talking about is strictly from the Verizon network. has nothing to do with the droid. And it is not $50 more per month for me.
(I have 4 lines, two with data plans, 2 regular phones. Verizon MAKES you pay data for every phone on the family plan, even if the phone is not capable of using it).
As for switching to Verizon service...I suggest everyone wait until a friend switches, and then wait around for his 3rd or 4th bill. Count up all the inaccurate charges. Listen to him call Verizon and get told he can like it or pay $250 to end his contract...
then get back to me.

By pure clock speed they are close, but the actual cpu is significantly different and more efficient. It's like comparing a 1GHz P4 to a 1Ghz Core Solo - the Core CPU runs circles around it. Unrooted, same OS, the Droid will clock significantly faster. If you like your modded phone, that's great, but most users don't mod their phone (and the Droid will likely get rooted as well).

This is actually not true at all, check on howardforums for more info. Walk through your needs with a rep. Sometimes they will do it in a roundabout way, but you will only pay for data plans where it is used. With their latest plans this is easier because the data isn't actually a plan any more, it's a feature added on to the base america's choice plan (which also happens to mean you can remove/add data/smartphones from your plan at any time without extending your contract... nice change from days of old).
If the rep does try to force the smartphone data features on all your phones, it's because they don't know what they are doing - ask for a manger in that case.

The thing you forgot that the G1 uses arm 11 500 processor while the droid use an Cortex A8 processor. actually the Droid actually outperforms the Samsung Moment 800mhz processor since that also uses and outdated Arm 11 processor. its like comparing a Intel Quad duo with the same clock speed against a I7 processor. At the same clock speed the I7 always outpeform the Intel Quad by alot.
The OMAP3430 actually is comparable to the Snapdragons. So again just because they have the same clock speed doesnt mean that droid is by far faster than the G1. Far more powerful GPU, and Processor with a far better screen is why the droid kills the G1 on performance. Shoot the g1 is the weakest android device along with the Mytouch 3g.

On paper the droid is the best android phone released . but in real life , the g1 kicks butt and doesn't take any names . As of now , the g1 is just much more adaptable .

I think root access makes htc phones more interesting. However if the droid ever gets a mod group going, it will be beastly. The phone is still alot stronger and more capable hardware wise to run better apps.
