Hello,
Does anyone know WHY it isn't possible to use a non-gmail google account for the market app? I tried to use mine but it says I need a gmail account attached to my google account.
I'm all pro-gmail and stuff, but I have my reasons for not having a gmail account.
Thanks,
Johhny

It's going to be possible to use payment options other than Google Checkout....but afaik this hasn't happened yet!

If you ever have to wipe your phone, without a gmail account you won't be able to finish the setup. That's also where your contacts come from.

I never knew this!:o So ggrant, if you had say a hotmail account and a yahoo account or somesuch, and resolved never to cross the threshold of Android Market (& tried dealing with individual devs by paypal etc), you couldn't actually finish set up or retrieve contacts?

If you ever have to wipe your phone, without a gmail account you won't be able to finish the setup.Well the point is, I did a factory reset (htc Hero), and skipped the google-account step. Everything works, except the Market app. So now when I open the market app, it says I need to register with my Gmail account (which I "don't" have, but I DO have a Google account).
:(
There are other ways of buying apps but I believe the range is much smaller than on Android Market. There's https://slideme.org/users and there's Cyrket (which isn't loading for me today although I've used it in the past). Also, some devs have their own websites where you can pay by PayPal and download directly from the site.

All you have to do is sign in with your google account.

All you have to do is sign in with your google account. nope... When I login with my google account (email: example@mydomain.com) it connects to the servers, and then says:
Create a new Google Account
example@mydomain.com doesn't use Gmail
[......username.......] @gmail.com
Alternatives:
[........dropdown............]
something about accepting the google TOS
(can be inacurate, translated from Dutch)
Point is, I did create a google account with my email (example@mydomain.com) - I use google analytics with this account for example.

You can register without a data plan using adb. Not sure about retrieving contacts.

I have exactly the same problem of Johnny.
I do want to use Android (and so Android Market) using my Google Account that is a no-Gmail Google Account but a full Google Account. All the other Google services are working with it. And even if I go the the Android Market web page I'm able to login with my No-gmail Google Account (https://www.google.com/accounts/ServiceLogin?service=androidmarket&passive=86400&continue=https://market.android.com/&followup=https://market.android.com/)
The problem is just when I want to insert my No-Gmail Google Account in the Android handset. Tryed with Android 1.6, 2.0 , 2.1 and 2.2 Froyo.
Thank in advance.
