ok, so upgraded my ROM and i was able to get it to install. what i did was copied all of the unzipped files (except the adb ones) into the tools directory of my android sdk install and viola!
you could also just edit the batch files to point to your tools directory for adb...

I did mine thru the terminal but I used 2 different links. I did the 2 builds from this link.http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4921092&postcount=196 And since I already had the new maps.apk installed I used the second link to install the maps.apk.http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4921911&postcount=292 After I did the ash, remount and install, nothing. Rebooted and it was there.
I know this is kind of convuluted but it worked for me. I already had the Eclair maps. If you don't already have the new maps.apk just try one or the other.

Good, when I updated Cyan last night, after the 1st reboot I had Nav. Went to recovery and ran fix permission, rebooted, no Nav. Checked again in 3 hours and it was back. Also if you mount your sd card you will see it created a nav folder.

[EDIT]
it actually did start talking to me once i went outside. apparently the GPS can't penetrate this dungeon i work in and it won't talk until it gets a lock. stupid basement :)

go to settings , voice synthesis . if you dont have it , it will prompt for a download . i think that you already have it . it didnt promt me in the google navigation , but thats because i already installed it a long time ago(voice) .

I had 4.2.4, downloaded 4.2.3.1, installed (works like a charm), and am about to go back to 4.2.4. It's just an extra step, but it's probably safer, since everyone has tested it that way. This is just my opinion and I am by no means smart about this...

I would love to try it, just for the fun of it...unfortunately, on my 40 mile each way trek to and from work alone I pass through some areas that are "data dead zones" voice works fine and I can talk all the way home...but data will refuse to load.
Not that I need nav to find my way to and from a place I have gone 6-7 days a week for the past 6 years...but i wouldnt rely on it if I was traveling somewhere.
...I ended up installing copilot 8...which is absolutely great! and does not require anything but a GPS signal...and a constant power supply ;) :p

What I had to do to solve this was this..uninstall Google Voice, then reinstall the maps, and then reinstall google voice. I think when you install the maps, its best to do so without google voice installed first. I had similar problems as you but did the above and now everything is super duper.

Goy navigation working on my second phone without a sim card, just using gps.
Sorry if this seems like a stupid question. I have a G1 with Cyanogen 4.2.4 installed. I was thing about adding the Navigation using this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=583684 . My question is with Google Voice. I do not have a Google Voice account. The last I heard you had to receive an invite to receive an account. Do I just have to have this app installed on my phone for the Navigation to work or do I actually have to have the Google Voice app with a active account? Thanks for all your help.

Just happened again, I flashed 4.2.5 again right before I left work. Nav. working fine, came home tried it again and still fine. Just checked again it was fine, checked the market real quick and now I'm getting nothing.
