It curves up at the bottom, and if you're holding the phone in landscape, the keyboard folds down.

Seriously though...

The Mail app completely sucks, use GMail for all your mail.

It's not so good at playing videos.

There's no Flash - but it's coming soonish.

There's not a lot of memory for Apps unless you Root it and do the Apps to SD thing.

The battery lasts about a day.

I think just about everything else can be fixed with apps.

The ups...

There are too many to possibly list in one night.

Welcome to the world of Android and your new G1! Another plus with the G1 is the fact you can customize/ optimize / and root your phone. Lot's of info here on how to do it. Are you currently with T-Mo or are you jumping ship from the iphone?

Anything software wise is the same on any other with-google device.

As for hardware, the screen will loosen over time, period. That's where a hard plastic or gel skin comes into to play to keeps things tight. (Body glove, Boxwave crystal slip, or TMo hard plastic cases come to mind), though they add 1mm typically.

If you don't need a keyboard, checkout the HTC devices with SenseUI (multi-touch, better UI, 5 screen spaces, better widgets)--they are currently nicer.

If you do not want to use Gmail (although it is very good), there are a couple of decent POP/IMAP apps available: K9 (which is on the market) and Seven:

http://www.seven.com/press_releases/2009/SEVENNowSupportsAndroid.html

There is a link in the article to the free download. I use Seven which allows me to download ANY attachment on the phone (Gmail does not) and allows previews on the phone. Have fun. Oh yeah, if you do a bunch of traveling? Watch that data roaming! I use APNdroid to completely kill my data when I'm overseas.

Did you get it new or used? If new, why?

The g1 was a good phone for its day, but it is now a dinosaur. I can't believe anyone would even consider getting a phone that's over a year old.

It's not always possible to get what you want with phones under a year old when upgrading from a relatively new phone. While a newer model phone would typically have a bigger screen, faster processor, better camera, and more memory, you would still probably have to ditch some features you might like compared to your existing phone.

Take the G1 as an example. I like it because it runs Android, has a hardware keyboard, a reasonable screen size, and a reasonable processor speed. The only phone that matches those features, or tops them, is the Droid. All other Android phones either don't have a hardware keyboard or have smaller screen or slower processor.

The G1 has been out a year now, but if I wanted to upgrade my phone today I still couldn't get a Droid as it's not sold by T-Mobile UK. That Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 also looks good (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BPw-yKyxAuU&feature=player_embedded), but I don't know if it has a hardware keyboard, and it's not out yet anyway.

Also, not everyone can afford a new model phone - you will pay a considerable amount more in either handset cost or monthly plan cost for a new model phone compared to, say, a two year old phone.
