well you didn't get rid of the operating system...
second i don't think there is a new update for the droid yet...

if you don't mind losing any settings you have, i'd recommend a factory reset it should be in your settings somewhere

but first i'd just try pulling the battery for a few seconds and restarting the phone.

did that, all i can do now is get to the screen:

Android System Recovery:

reboot system
apply sd card.update.zip
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition

i wiped it, then rebooted. still nothing. it like freezes on the first image of restarting the phone.

the lil green guy, with the buildings and the motorola logo in the spotlight like batman.

Any suggestions?

are you turning the phone on into recovery mode? pull the battery and just turn it on with the end call button and nothing else.

is there a red one? probably the back key.

how were you starting the phone, you're in recovery mode, which i'm assuming you don't mean to be in?

so this is what happened when you tried to update the phone that it said you had?

and you've never rooted the phone or anything right?

i think you might have a faulty phone.
nothing you did should have done that... did you turn on debugging in the settings? not sure what that would have to do with the update though...

you haven't done anything wrong, i'd give customer service a go... phone shouldn't do whatever it did. which i can't seem to figure out.

theres no way this is a faulty fone, it was working great til i did something wrong to it.

any suggestions?

have any friends you can ask?

you need to put a copy of the os onto the root of your sd card . rename it update . go into the recovery screen (where you are at right now ) and press apply update . if you were getting an update , it could have erased your os before rewriting a new one . for some reason it could have erred . i dont know where you can get a download .

What you really need to do is contact Verizon. They are there to help you, and you clearly have a problem that you don't properly understand (and it looks like you are having some miscomunication with the members here, who despite having best wishes, are not Droid experts). It sounds as though somehow the firmware was corrupted, and Verizon can fix it or replace the phone for you.

this same thing happens when tmo updates its software for android . in a certain percent of phones the update corrupts and the phones end up "empty" , without a os . the solution is usually simple for a g1 or a mytouch , as the official updates are very easy to find online . since the droid is new and verizon is new to the game , it may be hard to find an official os to download online . eventually , over time , im sure the updates for the droid will be much easier to find . as good as tmo customer service is , they dont know much about android . chances are that verizon customer service probably knows even less .

Yeah it sounds to me like an OTA update just went wrong - it does happen.

The solution is as simms22 said - you'd need to find an update file to put on your SD card and reload your OS.

Why did the Droid say you had an update? Was it an OS update (a grey popup window saying there is a system update) or was it an app update (where either the notification bar at the top shows an icon that says there are update found and you go to the Market to download them)? I'd be surprised if it was an OS update as we'd have other people mentioning it... but then again... I said that about Donut arriving two weeks earlier than expected so I'll shurrup now.

Where to find and OS for the Droid? No idea... sorry.

From what I've talked to folks at a couple verizon stores, their training on the Droid was pretty solid. I'm in IT, and I usually catch BS off these guys and run away as fast as I can, but I was truly impressed this go round at least by the couple people I talked with. It's going to depend on your store and the person you talk to obviously, but generally speaking it sounds like Verizon put some serious effort into this launch and training (if the rep was able to get it).

This, combined with their shockingly fast response to the early bugs (the Dec patch list) gives me the impression that Verizon really wants this thing to work. Now may actually be the best time to ask them for help, before they give up. :)

That said, I definitely wouldn't trust phone support for a problem like this, but taking it to a store should be fine. If they can't figure it out they'll probably swap the phone. There's no official patch yet, so you probably aren't going to find an image on your own anyway, nor is imaging your phone something you should mess with without proper understanding of the process.

Also I would google for a Motorola phone forum to post questions to maybe there is someone on one those forums that can point you in the right direction to obtain the droid rom.
