View Full Version : Google Nav: Was the precipitous drop in Garmin's Stock Price Justified?

Yes. Yes it was.
I'm relatively sure I've tried just about every GPS nav solution for Android with the exception of T-Mo's TeleNav service. I eventually settled on Alk's CoPilot Live and have been happily using it ever since it hit the market.
I gotta say Google has a home run with realtime turn-by-turn navigation added to their Maps app. Not that this is a huge shock...we've all been irritated they didn't do it sooner. Even though it's still Beta (what from Google isn't?), the navigation execution is really mature, especially for one of Google's new apps.
I'm really impressed with how well it works, even running on a modded ROM (Cyanogen 4.2.4) on a now lowly G1. In short....I love it.

What happens when you leave a coverage area though? No map. And there are a few features it still needs so it can't replace my Navigon yet.

I haven't tested out the cache yet, but for a smooth integration into an already user friendly map service that's free is good enough for me.....

Agreed..I always just used Google maps and watched myself travel..works just as good but the Nav is dirty

I don't think Garmin shows a picture of your destination when you arrive. I like that part..And in closing, that is why the Garmin's stock should drop.

Well, there are a number of reasons stocks drop. In this case I think there is NO DOUBT that google nav will take some market share from garmin. I'd say few people with the Droid are going to go out and buy a Garmin device tomorrow.
even if it is not exactly perfect (areas outside of coverage area as noted) it is free. And it is already there. i think that will deter most people from making another $200 investment in functionality they already have in their pocket.
And really if you get down to it. Most people won't even realize the lack of coverage weakness until it actually happens (like me, i never would have thought of that).
And maybe nav caches the whole map from starting point to destination in case you lose signal along the way. i don't know.
But yes...even if Google nav doesn't do it...the smart phone market will start eating lots of devices alive IMO. MP3 players will be like Walkmen in the near future. It will be like something you hope you don't get from your cheap aunt for christmas.
Same with Garmin. Unless they start building a satellite phone into the devices or something to make them ultra-unique...smart phone navigation is the way of the future and it is way too late in the game for garmin to start thinking about making a phone.

Saw an ad the other night for the Nuvi phone. As a GPS owner for me the issue is the rather high cost of updated maps every so often. I have a Nuvi 350 and have never updated the maps due to it costing around $100 to do so. One of the better things about it is the ability to load databases of custom POI's-I have things like Wal Mart, various restaurants but here in Chicago for me the killer app is the database of red light cameras, which gives a voice warning when I am a pre determined distance from one. At $90 a pop it's a good thing to have.
has anyone researched any way to give google maps some cacheing ability? I would definitely like to give the maps program space on my memory card to store all of southern california.
i wouldalso like to give it space to cache all of the phillipines to some extent (prob streets) so that when i go there i wont have to rely on an internet connection that likely wont work.

GPS < GPS + Phone.
We have a great number of applications in the smart phone market, like Google's navigator, Waze with the maps built by a community of drivers, Ceiborg with the Ceiborg-Tours and on and off line maps, NAV4ALL with its advanced navigation system, and so many others...
The reason of the drop in stock prices is obvious. I would not invest a single $ in GPS companies.

It wouldn't be able to do navigation, but there's an app called BigPlanet that allows you to save maps to your phone. I recently moved to a new city and was able to save the map onto my SD card. This is particularly useful to me as I don't have a data plan.
