Okay, so I've been out of the loop for a while... I've fallen behind and I'm still running 4.04. Anyways, I am going to upgrade using these instructions:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Main_Page#Upgrading_from_a_CyanogenMod_version_les s_than_4.1.99
Are you guys finding that a wipe is necessary? Also, if I do wipe, nothing happens to my apps on my sd, right? So when I load up android and sign in, they'll all be there?
thx

Just wipe, it won't touch the apps on your sd card. and make sure you download and flash both files like his wiki says to,

Didn't wipe and had no problems. Just use astro to back up your apps if you wipe, won't take over 30 m inutes to be back and running.

Well, the apps are on my sd card, so a wipe wouldn't get rid of them, right?
So you're saying that its just like updating to a new rom just with that added step of flashing the "recovery"?

yup . just the extra step . be sure you dont reboot after the htc 1.6 ! after flashing cm , you can reboot . or you will lose root and have to reroot .

So I did all the stuff and it rebooted into recovery? What do I do?
Edit: So I just did a nandroid restore. I don't really have time to be troubleshooting and potentially not having a phone for a day or so. In the meantime, can we try to figure out what went wrong?

And do a Nandroid backup before you do anything else :D It could save you a load of grief.
This week I had a problem with 4.2.3.1 and was able to flip back to official Donut 1.6 to see the week out until I had time to go back and re-do 4.2.3.1. In the end I restored 4.2.3.1 from the Nandroid backup I did of that, performed a wipe and it came up okay. Before that it would halt at a black screen after the Cyanogen Android flashscreen.

Well, thats 4.2.3.1 restored and working successfully. Now updated to 4.2.4 - although I am a bit shocked that the available memory is now down to 41.72MB from 71MB under 4.2.3.1.

My internal memory went down too after the HTC 1.6 and new Cyan. I did a wipe about a month after that and the memory went back uo to normal.

I'm hoping to avoid having to do a wipe :( The lower memory doesn't seem to have slowed the G1 down at all. But all the same, it is a huge chunk gone in just one single update!
I thought Cyanogen did Apps2SD automagically? Seems not to be the case. Time to do some reading ...

it does it automatically if there is a valid partition on the sdcard. which you can do from the recovery now a days.

Yea ... see ... I thought I'd read that somewhere also ... but unless it is doing that and I just cant see it ... it seems not to be  I'm guessing thats why the memory has been eaten up so much with the "standard" apps that get loaded as part of this distro.

You can partition your card from the RA recovery. Of course you will have to flash thge recovery. Instructions are on the link.

Not that I don't like members helping out other members... I still need help.
If I do a wipe, what happens to my apps on the sd card. Will they just reappear when I start up again or will I have to go delete them off the card?

Your paid apps will show up in the market, you will be able to redownload them. You can back up most of your free apps with Astro file manager, free. It will back all except the private and paid apps, those you will have to remember and redownload.

I don't think you quite understand my question, which is probably my fault. What I'm mainly concerned about is wiping my phone and then having all the apps still on the SD. Then, when I try to set my phone back up and reinstall the apps, there would be problems because there are already files there or when I reinstalled an app it would produce a duplicate file on the sd? Not an issue?

There won't be any duplicates after you wipe and reinstall. I have wiped 4 or 5 times so far, never any problem with the apps. I hope that answered your question. Be sure to do a nandroid before you wipe just in case of a problem.

i discovered that after rooting and Upgrading from Cyanogen 4.04 to 4.2.4, i no longer have ring tones for my phone just one default ringtone which is hard to hear when i have a call.
Is that the same for all you guys? If so how do i get more ringtones on my rooted phone?

All your ringtone need to be are mp3 (http://androidcommunity.com/forums/#). Here is a site with all kinds of songs. I use these as ringtones and I know they work. Just make a ringtone folder within the media folder and add the ones you want.
http://www.androidtunes.mobi/ (http://www.androidtunes.mobi/)
As for the volume of the ringtone you need Audio Hack from the market.
