So I am by no means a n00b too the internet computers or even linux.

I am brand new to my personal Android device. I've rooted it and I'm running the JF rom. I would honestly like to switch back to the T-Mobile rom, but I want to save all my application data. Like all of the custom ring tones I've set in ringo lite, or my personal account information for my email accounts in the varied clients on the phone.

Is it possible to retain this information and switch from rom to rom? I think my problem is that I don't understand the jargon associated with this stuff yet.

Furthermore, does anyone know of any applications for field testing via the phone? For instance the types of programs a cell technician would use to test signal strength and what not.

Thanks.

Why would you want to unroot , besides for the fact that your running an out of date rom ? Try upgrading to a more recent rom . You know that the latest is the greatest , right ?

Not really wanting to un-root, more wanting root with a stock rom. Is that possible?

Moreover I want to be able to test out other roms at random, but I don't want to lose my preferences and settings each time. That's really the question I'm asking.

There's an app called Terminal Emulator or something that you can use for this problem. It pretty much works as in linux. You can more or less do this (worked on my Magic at least):

su
cp -r /data/app/ /sdcard/This will simply copy the applications folder to the sdcard. This, however, only copies the applications as they were when you installed them (I think). I'm not sure where the files you want to copy are located, but you should be able to use find and grep to locate them.

Good luck!

ok first welcome to android..next your questions
1. a great backup option is my backup pro $5 bucks on the android market. but this will only work within the same rom (i.e. cant back up on a custom rom and restore on the tmobile rom. but
2. your ringtones should be on your sdcard or you can copy it from the media-notifications folder or the music-ringtone folder using a file explore like astro also on the market.
3. all email account data should be in your email inbox accessible through the email client on a desktop computer i.e gmail or yahoo or whatever. the phone just pulls from your acct and displays it on your phone. if you wipe your email on your phone its still in your email.
4.as far as field testing all phones come with a hard coded way to access this. its not an app. for example the samsung moment can be done by holding talk track pad and end while you boot up. it all depends what phone you have and what manufacture. also the phone carrier themselves have ## codes for this example sprint and verizon have MSL codes (##six numbers# that do this :different for all phones: or for data its ##3282# plus MSL (spells data) not sure on gsm call customer care and ask them directly tell them your the IT for your company and you need your MSL or engineer test code to access internal device info like PRL signal quality gps reading etc. if you say it like that you sound real and they usually give it to you. or just keep calling back till some newbee gives up the goods to keep his CSAT ratings up. WARNING !! though these menus can seriously brick your phone if you change stuff without knowing what your doing you can kill your data or even the ability to make calls be careful and I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. by the way im a mobile engineer i do this daily for one of the big 4.
