Hey everyone,
I have a G1 and still waiting for 1.6 is it still being pushed out?
I did the checkin thing which showed in system update that there is an android 1.6 14mb update, but when I click on download it doesn't do anything and says requires restart. I have restarted and even taken the battery out but still nothing. Does anyone have an idea on what's going on? Cheers

Search on this forum and do the manual update to 1.6 rather than wait.

Once an update is available to your phone, it will be available for the foreseeable future. All G1 handsets on T-Mobile in the UK can currently get 1.6 OTA, this is shown by the fact your phone tells you the update is available.
What kind of data connection do you have when you try to download it? Is it GPRS, 3G, or WiFi?

Cheers I don't feel comfortable doing a manual update as ill probably **** it up.
Extorian - I have tried it on WiFi and 3g, it says it starts downloading but then stops....and says requires restart

Hmmm, it takes quite a bit to **** it up :D But if you're really not confident then its probably as well you don't try, unless you've a techie friend on standby.
Is your ADSL connection (I can see you're UK) reliable and fast? Check it out against Speedtest.com and Pingtest.com to see what kind of speed you get and how reliable it probably is respectively.
If there's not a problem there then try doing the download as near to the router as you can get, without getting silly LOL ;) , and have the phone plugged into its charger just to make sure that you've got a good solid WiFi signal and there is no chance that the battery is going to let you down.
If all else fails - try the manual method, set it all up but don't actually do it. Just go through a "dry run" of booting it up into the mode where are ready to flash the new image but don't actually do it. Just try out starting it up with the combination Home+Power button presses. Once you're ready then actually flashing it is a simple matter.
Just to remind you - these are the steps culled from another post on this forum
Manual install Android update 1.6 Donut
http://android.clients.google.com/updates/kila_eu/signed-kila_eu-DRC92-from-CRC37.a7b90b4e.zip
- Download above
- Rename to update.zip (if doing this in Windows make sure its not renamed update.zip.zip !!)
- Put on root of your SD card
- Reboot your phone into recovery mode. Power off the phone first and then hold down the Home key while powering it back on (keep it held until you see the recovery mode icon)
- The recovery mode is finished loading when you see the ! mark inside the triangle. Press Alt+L (Home+Power buttons if no physical keyboard) to display the list of options.
- Press Alt+S (or use scroll ball to choose "apply update") to flash the file update.zip.
- Wait for the update to apply. Your phone may reboot during this process so be patient.
- Press Home+Back if prompted to reboot your phone.

Tried the download with full bars on wifi and still no change.....
Cheers for the info there that could be what I have to do,although what does save it on the root of the sd card mean?do I save it from the pc onto the phone or download straight from the phone?Would ringing T-Mobile be an idea? Cheers :D

The root folder of you SD Card (or any drive for that matter) is the one where all other files and folders are placed. For example, if you open up your C: drive on your PC, you're in the root folder of the C: drive. If you connect a USB flash drive, and open it, you'll be in the root folder of your USB flash drive. If you then go into another folder, you're no longer in the root folder.
So, connect your phone to your computer, mount the SD card from the phone's notification bar, and when the new drive opens in Windows you're in the root folder. Copy the update.zip file into ther and NOT into any other folder.
