If G1s are truly unable to recieve the 2.0 update....

If Google and T-Mo really can't find a way to update G1's to 2.0, do you suppose that could be reason enough for T-Mo to allow G1 owners to purchase a new phone @ contract pricing in exchange for a 1 year extension of the service plan?

I know if I was offered, I'd be on board.

Any thoughts? Maybe I'm overly optimistic (even though I love my G1!!).

I agree that they should have something for all us G1'ers out there and I like your suggestion. I would definitely be on board with extending the contract if I got the contract price (though I would love the selection to include some or comparable devices to the other carriers)

I love to get this treatment too but I don't think its going to happen to everyone. They would have to do this with every Android device at the rate the updates are going.

People its business. If the g1 gets all updates what's the point of a newer phone with the same os. Yes u can change hardware around but still they wanna sell phones not work on upgrades for older phones.

I think people would update for the hardware alone. There are so many areas for improvement on the G1 (hardware wise) that I bet if they were offered this, a large percentage of G1 users would upgrade.

Plus, they would be selling phones! Lots of them! And they would also get contracts extended a year, another big plus for them. Especially now with the increasingly competitive Android handset market, it would probably benefit T-Mo to have G1 users locked in for an extra year.

Just my $0.02. I know it probably won't happen though because like Erin said, we weren't promised 2.0.

Android 2.0 Eclair has proprietary drivers for audio/video that the G1 doesn't have. So in order for the G1 to run an official Eclair, Google would have to include those drivers from HTC with their update, which is unlikely to happen.
The only possible way now for the G1 to continue receiving updates is to root it and install modified firmware. Other than that, the G1's update cycle stops at Donut 1.6

You were a consumer not a beta tester.

if i'm not mistaken most carriers take a loss on most phone's they sell to you at contract prices, which is why they extend your contract with the hopes of making the money back up on your service plan.

so selling phones but offering one year extensions might not make them the profit a 2 year extension would.

also jace is right, some of the early flaws of android may have made us feel like beta testers, we were in the end consumers buying that product, which came only with the os as it was currently shipped, the upgrades are done in good faith from the company.

finally, i believe last i heard, there is a very good chance 2.0 will show up for the g1.

You're probably right, but I wonder if since the people who are buying Android handsets, are likely very into having nice phones with the latest and greatest technologies, if it would be beneficial for T-Mo to have the G1 users locked in on their plans for another year so they don't go chasing some other hot devices on other networks the next year. I'm sure at this point that T-Mo is hoping to have something great, device wise, around the time the G1 contracts are up, but rather than risk it, why not get them all locked on for an additional year and burn up current phone stock?

To know for sure, we'd have to have some numbers in front of us, but its not too crazy of an idea in my opinion.

Also, I hope you're right on 2.0 coming to G1, but I've heard just as many people say yeah as nay.
