I picked up a HTC Tattoo while awaiting the arrival of new and modern android based phones. I'm carrying out some research as part of a phd. It was suggested I get an iphone but after looking at both android and apple I picked android (Better SDK blah blah)

So I deploy my application to android that I've been testing in the emulator successfully.

Low and behold there is no proxy setting for the phone over the wifi!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What the heck???

What are people meant to do? Rely on dodgy 3G connections???? Does anyone know how to get around this easily? APN doesnt work for wifi it appears.

I mean I can't believe this.

In this context, a proxy server only affects browser traffic. Some mobile providers still use proxy servers to cache and reduce their network traffic, or because they have limited network resources.

Some more information about what you're trying to do would be helpful - such as what type of connection are you trying to make, and to what? TCP or UDP? What port? Where is the server you're trying to connect to? On a local intranet or on an external internet?

It is not just a question of what the mobile providers do --

I spend the work day behind a corporate firewall where all http traffic is forced to go through a proxy server (Big Brother, not traffic shaping).

Without being able to set the proxy server ID in my browser I am unable to use WiFi for web access during office hours.

I would love to find an app that will allow me to associate a proxy server with each wireless net I hook up with. The iPhone does this. Why can't the aPhone?
