Update HTC Hero and root it questions

Hello I bought today a HTC Hero no branded and it came with 1.5 SW. It is a little bit laggy and doesen't load youtube videos. I want to update but want to root it too :(

Is it possible to update to the latest version and root it ? Because I have heard that they fixed the bug/exploit. If it is possible please let me know with posting it here and give me a guide please. Thanks :)

I'm a newbee, and just got a HTC Hero with the same firmware(1.5), baseband version, kernel version, build number and software version numbers as yourself (identical), and am keen to root my phone.
