Make Gmail app go away!

For some reason any new email from my Gmail account is showing up in the "Gmail" application only and not in "Mail". This is an intermittent issue - it will work as expected for days and then this problem will surface. The only way I have been able to temporarily solve it is to do a hard reset of the phone.

I need a way to disable or delete the Gmail app. I want to be able to use Mail exclusively.

Is this possible? Can anyone help?

need more info..rooted...what phone..if your rooted then yes possible

enter console and type:
mount system(enter)
rm /system/app/(.apk)<-- what ever the gmail.apk is

also the /system/app is for cyan roms the path could be different for other roms
