the hero doesn't have the hold phone button for voice dial?
On the Droid, if you press and hold the magnifying glass icon for about a second, a "Speak Now" message appears. If you say "Call Bob Smith", and he's in your contact list, it'll dial him.
You can also say "Dial xxx xxx-xxxx" and it will dial it.
Not sure if this is an OS 2.0 feature, but I believe it was on my myTouch... not sure.

Shel,
Google Voice Search is very cool and great for stuff like navigation, but it is tough to rely on for general contact dialing:
Works for a random subset of contacts. Returns web results for many.
Requires exact info: "Call Bob Smith at mobile." Will not ask user for clarification by voice command.
May frequently get "Connection Error / Try Again."
DFXmobile developed Voice Dialer HF (get via Android Market) in response. Allows true "never-touch-the-screen" hands-free voice dialing in the car. See http://www.dfxmobile.com/voicedialerhf for full details and setup instructions.
Limitations:
- Droid only (Android 2.0)
- Uses camera button to start, speakerphone/mic to converse with the user
- Only switches to Bluetooth for the actual call
- Paid app for something that should have come with the phone

With the way Google is, don't be surprised if they suddenly release a free version that does all your app does, and probably more. For crying out loud, my Motorola phone had voice activated dialing via my BT headset 5 years ago. It should come with the phone, you are right.
