View Full Version : G1 is looking a bit outdated....

I love my G1, dont get me wrong, but my boyfriend just got the MOTO CLIQ and all of a sudden, my G1 seems pretty lame. The cliq is so much faster, cooler widgets and apps, and just makes me plain jealous.
SO...the question is - How can i make my phone cool again!?
I used to have a shadow which was pretty easy to configure/make themes/etc. But this one has me absolutely baffled.

Root your phone.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=567610
And theme it.

It will fast and classy, just like a new phone.

if your not rooted or anything like that....i would suggest that first. if you are rooted..
cyanogenMOD is a great rom out for g1s right now. w/ better browser, auto overclock to make the phone run faster, along with a few other great tweeks.
if i may... i too felt my g1 was outta date a little while ago. i was still runninn jesusfrekes rom. now i heard he stopped make roms and put input in to help other devs. i changed to cyanogen. got apps2sd with ease...something that took hours at first.
i just put voice navigation on google maps. thats soo freakin sweet.
i would theme it if your bored.
if theres nothing out you like and theres something specific you want from your boyfriends phone.... ask a dev.

I've read on here though that rooting it can be bad. What does that mean exactly to root it?

(people might not like this but oh well)
NO CURRENT ANDROID PHONE IS COOLER THAN THE G1. It can run any version of Android that is on any of them phone and its 1 of 3 phones that can currently do that. My G1 is a Hero now, was a Cliq yesterday, plain ole 1.6 before that, a Pulse for a day and its gonna be a 2.0 soon.
Nothing beats the original lol:D;)

It means thgat you have complete control over your phone. You can delete native apps you don't use, wireless tether and voice navigation, all free. As djunio said there isn't presently a phone available I would swithch my G1 for.

I have never seen anyone permantely brick their phone from rooting it. Now when you get into flashing SPLs and stuff it gets kind of risky but one step at a time, eh? I suggest going to YouTube and watch someone root there phone and follow their actions exactly. There are auto root methods but those are iffy sometimes plus its always good to get your hands a little dirty :)
havikx
11-20-2009, 02:58 PM
just for reference....
root, while maybe not the most precise of tech definitions, is to have administrative capabilites over your phone. what does this mean? you can screw around with more files that you wouldnt be able to. you can screw aroud with the files that make the phone run the way it does. add modified files inplace of stock files (roms)...and you modify the way the phone acts, looks, or performs.

Once you're rooted you can also apply themes. I actually rooted my wifes G1 just for that purpose. AHome and apps like that just don't do enough. My favorite feature of being rooted is nandroid... backup your phone EXACTLY how it is, meaning if I apply a theme or an app screws me up or something I just go back a day or two. :-)
I used to get a new phone every 6 months. Before I deployed to iraq I was into the Treo series. I came back and went with a WM5 phone, didn't like it and then Android came out. We've had our G1s for over a year now and not even looking back. It has everything we want with hardware, as for the software something new comes out all the time whether its a new app or rom. I may keep the G1 around another year.... before I would never do that.

Hero (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=574526) this is one of the best roms of any kind
Cliq (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=576067) still a work in progress but still pretty good

Donut/1.6 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=567610) the greatest rom to date and most stable and fast
oh yea your gonna need this (http://sapphire-port-dream.googlecode.com/files/spl-signed.zip) to but make sure you have a pvt board and the newest radio (http://sapphire-port-dream.googlecode.com/files/ota-radio-2_22_19_26I.zip) which you should already have but check first you can brick.
How to check that you asked lol, here (http://androinica.com/2009/09/08/how-to-understand-android-root-terms-and-procedures/#herorom) is how and there is other great info on this type of stuff, knowledge is power. I have never had a phone for 2 years lol, but I think I am with the G1, with the constant updates its hard not to..we get it all, the only thing I would change is the processor, and screen size/resolution with a few extras 3.5mm jack...I don't mind the looks of it as opposed to 90% of the forum haha

believe you me, one you get the hang out it and actually figure out what the hell that command prompt you just wrote did to your phone, it becomes second nature to change roms, themes, and all kinds of stuff. most updates, like the voice nav in maps, are now in update.zip form.
it'll take a while. maybe a few hours your first time around. after that... like a breeze. and TOTALLY WORTH THE HOURS OF FRUSTRATION, THE TIME SPENT TYPING COMMAND PROMPTS INTO TERMINAL EMULATOR, AND ALL THE HELP POSTS YOULL BE POSTING THRU THE PROCESS!

i would say devote a few hours of 1 day to it. get a nice and easy, short, android 4 dummies kinda guide... find a youtube video... follow what they say to get yourself rooted first. once your rooted and you change your recovery.img file.... youll be set to do all the fancy stuff that comes from rooting. like the cyanogen ROM! now with kewl blue theme! alright!
plus..everything gets much easier once cyanogens recovery is in. EVERYTHING.

and when i tried to reboot it, it just went to the recovery screen where it said that the rom was installed and then said rebooting...
but it was stuck there. So i tried to take the battery out and it did the G1 screen then turned white with black lines.
I'm going to try a few more things that may fix it, but for now, any ideas, i would LOVE.

Before you flash cyan you need to install the official adp (http://developer.htc.com/adp.html) recovery image first then when it reboots back to the recovery screen flash cyan 4.2.5, once you get cyan running all you have to do is flash the updates, its a long story on why you have to do it this way.

stay clear of modding your SPL. thats a sure fire way to brick your phone. wouldnt wanna ruin it after you just put all that hard work into it. i know the hero rom needs it. i'm stickin with good ol cyanogen simply for that reason. you had every guide known to us thrown at you in this thread...was it as easy as ANY of them made it out to be? no.
you think your gunna mod your SPL that easy? no...
my next upgrade for you would be the google maps voice navigation beta. theres all scripts out there you can follow in TE... but you search around...youll find it in update.zip form.

Both of my phones have Haykuro's spl, my first rooting experience in February 2009 took about 1 1/2 hours my second phone in July took 15-30 minutes. Rooting is not as hard as everyone makes it out to be. You just need to be careful and patient.

Yeah, you just have to read and do everything in the right order. It used to be alot more difficult than it is now.

flash the rooted base, dont do the expansion pack yet, the problem may be your sd is not formatted.
xxmadeyousmile
11-21-2009, 07:12 PM
do i need to wipe it or anything before i flash that?
djunio
11-21-2009, 07:14 PM
wipe every time you r going to a new rom
djunio
11-21-2009, 07:17 PM
once you get rooted, backup your sd card because your gonna make it into 3 partitions
xxmadeyousmile
11-21-2009, 07:23 PM
okay i flashed that file, now what?
djunio
11-21-2009, 07:24 PM
did it startup?
xxmadeyousmile
11-21-2009, 07:27 PM

YES! its on the android screen.
djunio
11-21-2009, 07:29 PM
Finally, success, good job, now back up your sd card we bout to partition it now, all the new roms use 3 partitions.
xxmadeyousmile
11-21-2009, 07:35 PM
Ah, im excited, not going to lie!
Lol I'm ready. Do i just need to use the recovery screen to partition it?
djunio
11-21-2009, 07:37 PM
not that one, use this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=566669 make a folder on your computer and copy everything from your sd 2 it so u can put it back after the partitioning
xxmadeyousmile
11-21-2009, 07:42 PM
I dont have anything on it lol i used a brand new SDcard to do this.
djunio
11-21-2009, 07:44 PM
oh, thats good, follow the instruction to get this and go back to recovery mode, i think its option 5, itll say something like part fat32+ext+swap, flashing this and partitioning the card is gonna b a breeze, should take 5 mins
xxmadeyousmile
11-21-2009, 07:53 PM
So I'm reading over it...which method should i use? there is ADB, console, terminal, fastboot?
djunio
11-21-2009, 08:01 PM
adb would be the easiest but i am assuming you dont have the right drivers, do terminal, its just as easy, b sure to reboot to recovery after u r finished
xxmadeyousmile
11-21-2009, 08:17 PM
im partitioning now. it asks what size for the swap. its automatically 32mb. is that okay?
djunio
11-21-2009, 08:19 PM
do 128 for swap, your gonna need it for hero and a few others, 32 is fine though
xxmadeyousmile
11-21-2009, 08:21 PM
how bout ext2 and fat32? does it matter?
im glad i asked
djunio
11-21-2009, 08:25 PM
not really but ext should b no bigger than 500, just set it to 500 and the rest for fat32
djunio
11-21-2009, 08:26 PM
when your done partitioning, convert your ext2 to ext3, its an option for that2 in that recovery u have now
xxmadeyousmile
11-21-2009, 08:34 PM
Sweet! Okay done!
djunio
11-21-2009, 08:36 PM
now nandroid backup, wipe n try that cyan again, flash that recovery first then when it reboots to the recovery screen, flash cyan
djunio
11-21-2009, 09:46 PM
u got it now
xxmadeyousmile
11-22-2009, 11:22 AM
Yep it got it! Sorry I had to leave right after I did that. There were some problems at work. I almost wish I had waited a little while to fix my phone and they wouldnt have been able to call me! lol
Cyanogen is pretty sweet too! I am definitely glad I did this!
djunio
11-22-2009, 01:32 PM

Sensehero 1.3.3 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=574526), I ran Drizzy and Jac and never had any lag on either 1, the key to hero is a large swap and high swappiness, hero uses 120mbs consistantly.

Don't get me wrong I loved the hero widgets but I must have tried every swap and swappiness setting and still got load screens although they were far and few in the end just more-over slow to open some stuff...are you running any of the diff kernel configs? im curious about the 10mb hack and if it is actually gonna increase performance

It does a lot and its recommended to use cpu scaling 384 min 528 max, mines is 528 min and max. I haven't seen not 1 load screen unless I accidentally go home with the keyboard open.

Been working. Before and after holidays are really BUSY for dealerships! I think I'm going to get used to this for a few days. Hopefully I'll have time to start on something new over the holiday.
Any recomendations? You thinking Hero?
