updating the firmware of a g1 with firmware 1.0 rc 8. help pleaseee

I really need some help. Just bought this g1 second hand. it had been factory reset to the firmware 1.0 rc8. there is no option to search for updates. i've had the phone on for 3 days now. does anybody know how long i have to wait for over the air updates or if they're still even doing the updates from 1.0? or anybody can tell me how to do it manually with a download which will wrk from 1.0
