App Name: Meebo IM
Author: Meebo(.com)
Price: Free

Meebo is a totally free IM program that supports AIM, MSN, Yahoo, Google Talk, Jabber and ICQ. You can even sign on using the same Meebo account that you use at http://www.meebo.com/. If you use a Meebo account, your IM history will be saved so that you can access it from any computer by logging in at http://www.mebo.comVersion: 1
Size: 138kb

Basic review:
To begin with, you are gretted with the very attractive Meebo "Instant messaging everywhere" login screen. If you already have a meebo account (free, http://www.meebo.com ), you can sign in with that username, and all of your IM services are already setup.

[I already have Meebo setup for myself, and have used it for a couple years now with no problems what-so-ever. The great thing about having a Meebo account, instead of signing on to each service, is that one Meebo account will automatically sign you in to all your services that you have setup. Also, with an account, all of your IMs are logged and saved so that you can go back to the website from any computer and find something you need.]

But you don't have to sign in with a Meebo account. You can sign in to whatever services you choose at the time. After signing in to your first service, simply click Menu, and tap "Sign on more".

Pros:
- All IM services work via your data connection, so all of you who don't pay for unlimited text messages - this is a money saver, for sure.
- I have been using it for about an hour now, with little activity, and have stayed signed in. That isn't to say that it will never kick you, but it's definitely working better than the standard AIM client, at least.
- Very clean layout. Almost boring, but not quite.
- As with most IM clients, contacts are sorted into your pre-defined groups, and offline contacts are in their own group that you can collapse.
- The contacts screen shows all of your contacts together, with a service icon (the AIM dood, the Y! logo, etc) next to their neame, as well as their buddy icon.

Cons:
- I've gotten some reports that this client also closes when Android needs it to, thereby signing out of your services...
- There doesn't seem to be a way to close your recent conversations. Your conversations are grouped at the top, and you can collapse the group, but there doesn't seem to be any way of actually "ending" a conversation.
- The conversation window leaves a little to be desired... It does slightly cross the boundary of "clean" and slips into "boring"... But it's not horrible.
- It does not save your login information after you sign out... You must completely re-enter your credentials.

Compare it to:
The IM client built into Android:
- I still prefer the google talk client to this one. But for all the other services, this is better. And it lets you connect to others that the built-in one does not (Jabber, ICQ).
IM+
- The UI is much better - more organized, cleaner. Connection stability seems just as good if not better. I definitely prefer this to IM+

Yeah I'm liking it for sure

but it still needs:

1) Audio alert options- in and out of convo mode, and if you are disconnected

2) Show nicknames

3) Smileys

4) Visual alert if you are disconnected (status bar icon)

and like you said- saving the login (pass is option)

nice review. Loads up much faster, and I can actually see all of my buddies right away. The biggest issue I had with the G1's IM, is that I always got kicked off AIM. Well, I just checked and Meebo kicked me off AIM. damn!

Seems to disconnect when I use the call end key to shut off my screen. Does this not happen if you let the screen just turn off by being idle?

I wish it had the same auto-formatting as the built-in Google Talk app.
It also seems to forget my passwords and log me out whenever it feels like it. I'll check it out again once it's updated.

meebo FREZES UP when signing in sometimes and not all the messages you send/receive appear. test it with a different acct on your pc and your G1...

I want to like this app but its completely unforgivable that it can't do something as simple as remember your signin settings. What we need is Beejive for the G1. Now that would kick the a** off everything currently available.

As of when? You know that an update (version 2) was recently released, right?

Meebo still has alot of things to fix/add

but they could be THE android IM app if they addressed the known wants & issues.

They should just get on it and get that stuff done and then everyone would be using it

BTW I don't know if this is a new function but you can close recent conversation but you have to open it to do so. Open the conversation then hit menu there will be a close option.

Maybe it's just me, but I wonder. Is anyone else just a little bit squeamish about giving away the passwords to their IM accounts? I dont mean to imply that the meebo folks would do anything but hold them safe for you. However, a certain amount of trust is required here. I think the meebo service is pretty cool and the android app for it is quite nice. But, they could do a better job of letting their users know that all of the messages go through their servers... including your passwords. Using their service is like calling a trusted friend and telling them to log in and send messages on your behalf. When using their web service, it's pretty obvious that's the case. This application is nothing more than a thin client to access their web service. The same trust is required.

Well as many of you guys might kno im the person who brings you the best updates of all about this application. Well here you go again.
The changes are For version 2:
* Stays connected longer (still not perfect, but we're working on
making it better, please bear with us)
* Lets you close IM windows
* Notifications are more specific
* Phone numbers, email addresses and links in the IM window are clickable

There are many features we're planning on adding. These are the ones
we'll be working on over the next few weeks:
* Ability to set your away message
* Ability to set your buddy icon
* Saving account information and auto-sign on
* Configuration of sounds/vibrate when receiving an IM
* Adding/removing/blocking people on your buddy list
* Viewing other people's entire away message

After the update, it worked great for a couple of days and now it won't stay logged in for more than a couple minutes at a time. I can't even have a conversation because it keeps dissapearing. It's pretty frustrating. I did try shutting down my phone and reinstalling it.

Does Meebo close itself on everyones phone? or just random phones? Seems like it's not working for a lot of people. Kind of makes these updates pointless, for now...

Try the new V6. It is almost perfect. No disconnectsd. No forced closes. No lost incoming messages. Much better than the other solutions. The dev has really been working on it lately.

Interesting... I'll have to have another look.

Because it's not your desktop but your browser. Got it?

I like meebo for yahoo! but it still has some flaws, for one not enough settings, and 2 if you and a buddy send a message at the same time it meshes the messages together..

also, while I'm all for simplicity, the UI leaves a lot to be desired. But since I'm hardly on yahoo, and I think Hello Yahoo! sucks, when I do go on yahoo for my 30mins to 1hr a day...Meebo is the app I use.
