Go check out aTrackDog. It does the checking for you automatically. The author said it can stay in the background... but I haven't seen that in action yet. As far as I can tell, once you leave the app, it's done. My only problem with it is that it checks the developers' sites as well and there's no way to turn it off. I would prefer to check only the Market.
Most apps will let you know about the new update when activated. If not, just go to my downloads section in the market and scroll over your installed apps. Those which were updated will be listed as "free" rather than as "installed" and you will know that you need to update them.
yeah, i've been using al74's method as well. if it's ever really going to work, it would be best if it was just part of android. some developers though (see SnapPhoto) check the version at launch - cool.
Yea, i had the first one and did not like it as it always went to the developers site and not the market.....
I just check about once a week.... No biggie..... And gives me more one on one with my phone....![]()
The only problem with that method is that it only works on things downloaded from the Market, and not for the apps I've installed from outside of the Market. This aTrackDog sounds like a good solution for me.
The "check the market for Free" solution is a PITA and too easy to miss things that are way down the list; aTrackDog immediately found 3 of them I needed to update, 2 from the Market (AK Notepad and AndroidConvert-which-renamed-to-DroidConvert) and one from a developer site (K-9 Mail). The app already did it's job for me, it's a keeper.
The only deficiency right now is if the update is from the developer site (like K-9) it takes you to the Market to search instead.
yea ill stick to the "check the market for free" =D
I check the market manually.
It doesn't take a long time or anything.
If there was to be a auto update notification in the future, I would imagine it would "search" once a day as to minimize battery usage instead of constantly checking for APP updates hourly.

aTrackDog is nice, but Im waiting for it to have notifications in the bar and auto checking at a certain time every day.
hopefully the market changes in Jan. will have this built in
